brent is up by nearly 1%. $120.74 is where brent stands right now. that's off the special highs as well. we have seen prices over $121 just a few moments ago so that's the picture for brent overall. let's talk about the situation that's developing, though, in the middle east. the stait of who are muz is a flash point for concerns about how this is developing. iran has been pushing ahead with its nuclear development. we have comments coming through from iran this which they said they are banning oil exports to british and french companies. that's in retaliation to eu plans on an embargo on oil exports to the eu from july the 1st. an impact on reality of british and french companies who already benefit little from iran but certainly is represents a development in the rhetoric that's coming out of this country. also, to point out, too, we do have u.n. inspectors in iran at the moment who are going to spend a couple days there looking into what they are doing at the moment. to bring this into context and give us more detail yousef joins us. what are the

>> i mean, we see brent, which is what we price off brent crude, kind of trading in $100 to $125 window. but you're going to see little flareups if something does happen in the middle east. i think with 1 million barrels of excess capacity right now, it's a razor-thin margin. it's not just the middle east. you go to nigeria, you start seeing production disruptions and you'll see impacts on the price. >> if i read you, then you think we're on the upper end of the range for brent right now? i guess smart idea since the higher priced oil right now? >> yeah, you know, it's never been this way before, but you bifurcated a way from wti in the gulf of mexico, because our refineries are primarily burning water-borne fuel. we kind of price against the same amount of the same barrels coming in on tankers. >> yeah. we highlighted all the acquisitions you most recently bought, property of exxon mobil on the gulf of mexico shelf right there. are you finished with that? where do you go from here? >> no, we're happy with where we are right now. we think we can have 10% to 15% organic growth off the as

you know, brent's gone to $120. and it seemed to butt its head there and come back again. >> i see it going a lot higher. brent has been in a bull trend since, really, december of 2008. after last year's pause of about 11 months or so, we've since resumed that bull trend following the break of $116.60. >> that should park in the 167 area. >> now we're resuming the much longer bull trend. >> you think it could exceed that high we see back in 2008? >> i think we could see a test of that. marginal overthrow, yes. the trend is in that direction. i've been watching wti closely. we can take out effectively the $104.50 area, complete the head and shoulders base there indicating the bull trend is continuing. >> there's the chart. typically the spread between brent and wti is $10. it's wider than that lately. >> historically it was about $1 or $2 premium wti to brent. then it went the opposite direction, about $18, $20. now you're starting to see it top around. brent could outperform over the next several weeks. but ultimate

brent spread blowing out. watch the refiners there. >> let's switch to apple and discuss what's going to happen tomorrow. that's the shareholder meeting. credit suisse, as we said, joining the $600 club. earlier today they're still bullish on the stock. we mentioned at the top of the show how you shorted apple today, which to me seems to be a bit of a risky position given the fact that you do have the shareholder meeting tomorrow. dividend could be on the table there. dividends on the table somewhere for some time most people think. why short ahead of something like that. >> a very hard, difficult trade to make. what traders do first is idea what their risk is. and their risk is known here. it's a stop close above the high that we made last week so you quantify what your risk is. the opportunities to get short apple are few and far between. we've been playing it from the long side here in essence for the last two years. but it's a hard trade, difficult trade to make. you ignore the fundamentals here. you put y

as a result, brent north sea went to $123 a barrel this week, we've been trading a little higher than that in the after-hours session. elsewhere, interesting story. alaska's north slope may now contain more than half the shale gas than the highest estimate for the marcellus formation. the slope may hold as much as 80 trillion cubic feet of shale gas. they plan to start drilling off the north slope this year. and gold notched its first weekly rise in four weeks. and the expectations of further easing in china and near zero interest rates has boosted gold's appeal. gold settled up about 3% this week at $1775 per troy ounce. but it failed to get to that $1800 level for the week. >> another day, where the dow reached and breaks the 13,000 mark, but it just can't seem to hold on to it. you know, it's been almost four years since we closed above that mark. we had better than expected home sales numbers, we had consumer sentiment, which was really good as well. >> joining us, let's talk about where the market may go from here from a fundamental and technical perspective. good to see you both

on the technicals, we have brent standing next to me. on the fundamentals we have michael holt, who covers the name for morning star. i want to start with you first of all. for the viewers, saying we can bring up a chart and take a look at what it's doing. >> i'm mildly bullish. look at a little history. hewlett-packard october low. which was 22. so it was 57% loss during that time period. pretty devastating to the stock. from october to now, last four and a half months, it has grinded slowly higher from 22 to 29. there are some dips and peaks. it was a slow grind. what i try to do at this point is measure what the upside targets may be from that low in october. 38% retracement could be right around 32. that represents a 38% retracement of the losses. >> right. >> 50% retracement would be right around 36. so for me, 32 i think is in the cards. 36 could be a bit of a struggle. >> let's look at the fundamental side of things. michael you said hp faces a significant head wind, but most of these investors have a reason to be optimistic as th

the spread between brent and crude is almost $20 a barrel. of what's going on with iran and with syria. so you wonder, is our market going to catch up, or will there be a contraction in brent. that remains to be seen. the other thing, by the way, don't forget you and i pay gasoline costs based on the brent contract. lucky us, as that goes up. it's pretty clear that gasoline prices are going to go higher. treasuries this week, you had rather soft auctions for the three, the ten and 30-year bonds this week. but if you bought into those, you have a profit already. because yields came down today as the risk off trades were put into place and they were buying treasuries once again today. let's bring in david as we look at some of the sectors that did well this week. technology is pinned at the top, mr. darst. i call it the sector for all seasons here. >> bill, as you pointed out on the show that 20% of the s&p 500 market cap today is tech now. it's the leading sector of the ten sectors. also on your comment about oil a moment ago, the bitter cold

you know, john, we see a pretty big disparity in prices between west texas intermediate and brent.hy do you think there's that spread? >> well, i think brent -- i'm sorry, west texas intermediate is so bottled up, that we have more of it than we can use. so that compresses the price. we don't have the infrastructure to move it to the refinery system. and one of the reasons our gasoline prices are being so impacted, with the shutdown of the three refineries in the pennsylvania area, that's going to cause more brent finished product to be imported into the middle atlantic and new england states. so you're going to see higher priced oil products coming into the market, because the brent price is now going to affect the american consumers more so than it has in the past. >> i see. the eu has said it will stop importing oil from iran by july 1st, if iran continues to develop the nuclear program. do you think that will occur? >> don't hold your breath. no, i don't. i think there will be so many waivers and exceptions. because if the least of all parts of the world that could afford highe

buy some wti and sell some brent crude. therefore we've seen the wti catching up as a result. you mentioned earlier, brian, about consumer confidence and the fact we are looking at oil prices up 11% so far this year. gasoline prices up about 40 cents. so why is consumer confidence at the highest level we've seen in a year? well, keep in mind it's a lagging indicator. and that is a big factor. citi saying there's about a six-month lee time here for the consumer confidence to catch up to what gas prices are. and with gas prices expected to be well over $4 in the summer months, look for consumer confidence to definitely fall. back to you, tyler. >> sharon, thank you very much. switch on the "power lunch" power surge and drill down on some of the storys that are driving the day. let's sort of pick up where sharon just left off. it's about soaring energy prices and the impact on the economy in the markets. as you probably know, our steve liesman spoke exclusively with treasury secretary tim geithner about that earlier today. and

>> that's what really brent is all about.been banging the table telling you that brent price is really the only one that matters. in the brent price we have it over $115 a barrel. the iranian minister has said he will not -- the country will not be deterred from their nuclear plans in any way whatsoever. he's on his way to china to see if there's a back door in terms of selling whatever crude oil that will be cut off from a boycott from the european union. he also said they are going to begin to stop transporting crude to those eu members that he finds distasteful, mostly britain, france and germany, who are leading the boycott charge. of course they don't ship a lot to those three countries, so it won't have an immediate impact on the price. then you have a whole bunch of articles, media coverage, of what is obviously an israeli thought to preemptively bomb over there. all of that is adding to what is basically a geopolitical rally. >> brent goes up, wti goes down, refiners in your portfolio or no? >> i'm actually short refi

brent right now up over $120 a barrel. real supply constraints out of the middle east, when you take into account seyria, sudan and yemen. nymex also ticking higher above 102.67. christine? >>> hey, ross, over in japan the cabinet has apparently author e authoriz authorized the prime minister's plans to double the sales tax by 2015. the tax height is part of noda's fiscal reform meant to fund growing social welfare spending. for the passage to parliament will face opposition from lawmakers many including members of his ruling party are determined to choke off the prime minister's moves and force an early election. japan's finance chief says the government plans to submit the bill next month. well, still in japan, b 0 oj chief is now saying it's going to take a while before japan can reach its 1% consumer inflation target. his comments suggest the central bank could keep monetary conditions ultra loose for a protracted period. the boj has released minutes of its january meeting which showed some board members blaming europe

>> i think we look at brent as being the price to worry about. that concerns us. wti is a much smaller part of the oil market. we are concerned definitely about brent and it seems as you mentioned the supply threats are not just iran, but we had issues in syria and somalia. we had issues in yemen and they are hurting non-opec supply and causing the market to destroy world oil demand and that's why we got so high. it's a concern for us. the original argument was that the first demand to be destroy side u.s. gasoline construction. you get to about $4 a gallon to do that. we have seen that and demand is falling happenidly. the oil market will go after emerging gdp growth and you highlighted the impact that we got here. that's how high we are and how worried we are. in terms of the reifying question, we talked about the gas line in disguise. when that rises because it's a crude, you can expect gasoline prices to go up too. at the moment i think there is an interesting strength to gasoline given as you said the situation is not seemingly that tight in the u.s. >> you b

brent, above. there we are, gilt, 0.1%. btp, 0.2%. brent right now, you can see at 118.13. a number of things going on here. we've got a streak in yemen and syria and sudan as well. sudan's taking 2.4 million barrels. and we've had pipeline explosions in homs, syria, as well. so it really is geopolitical tensions outweighing and supply disruption fears and outweighing weaker economic growth as far as the euro markets are concerned. christine, recap your day. >> well, two things moving markets today. ross, we had the comments that lifts the market sentiment. that drove sentiment across the region higher. of course, we have the nikkei up 2.6%. a six-month high. that easing drove down the yen which lifted the exporters and financial stocks. in shanghai we had comments after the markets closing. it will continue to maintain prudent monetary policy. it will continue to maintain basic stakt of the chinese currency, the yen. it also said house prices have moderated somewhat in some areas. so those are some of the things coming up in china. inflation, and, of course, the chinese cu

so even if you took the median, $70 a barrel, that would be a $40 hair cut on the price of brent northat would that do to wti? wti crude today was down on higher than expected inventory levels. so we saw a big decline there. in fact, it was down $2 at one time. it came off those lows. but when you look at the correlation between stocks and oil for the last year at least, you wonder what the price of oil would do to the stock market over that time frame. i'm very pleased to bring in our market analysts today who have been very patient this year, dean is the president of strategic market strategist, macrorisk advisers, and doug at ing. if oil goes sharply lower, what would that do to the stock market? >> over the recent time period, stocks and crude are highly correlated. a collapse in crude implies the inflationary collapse like we saw in 2008, if it's something specific to brent, you know, whether it's supply related, maybe that's a different story, but i think the correlation of risk assets is very much driven back to fed policy. >> what would stocks do in your opinion? >> because it'

show are familiar with the discount between west texas, the crude of west texas intermediate and the brentwhich we pay our gasoline off of. your company's doing something about it, isn't it? >> yes, we are. we're working in conjunction with our partners enterprise to reverse the seaway pipeline which operated from the gulf up to kushing in order to take kushing oil south. and 150,000 barrels a day of capacity onstream by mid-year and by the end of the year, over 450,000 barrels a day by capacity to help clear that kushing. project's going very well. >> will that do it? or is it about 1.5 million to shift? >> well, you know, it's a very good point. i think it will take more than that. and as a matter of fact, we have an open season out right now in order to probably twin that seaway pipeline. that decision closes on the 2nd of march, and we're most likely to build a twin to it going south because there is demand for a lot more than that volume. >> brent's probably correctly priced and west texas is underpriced because you're pipeline's not working yet, right? >> right. that's exactly right.

brent closing above $120 a barrel. amid continuing concerns between the tensions with iran, and lower production numbers in the north sea. that has pushed the energy complex higher. we got a bullish report when it came to natural gas. the drawdown this week, according to the government, was 127 billion cubic feet. that was near the high end. a big reversal in nat gas from yesterday, and then some as well on the back of this news. interesting day in gold as well. the headlines about the european debt swap, the ecb debt swap for greek debt, that turned the euro. that turned gold in dollars. we ended up high on the day for the second day. that also brought up silver and copper as well. >> bertha, thank you very much. the s&p as we've been pointing out has been hitting a seven-month high today, breaking through what has been considered a technically important level of 1350. back above that. cords according to our next guest, 1400 is not far away, despite of rising oil costs. let's find out why. jeffrey wise, chief technica
