tell us what's happening with brent crude now?> brent crude the first time is take over trading contract. now the most traded commodity future in the world. ever since crude oil, wti here domestically as well as brent oversees taking over, a lot more relevance than seeing spread between these two contracts way lot of traders look at, above $20. i think that all stems from the geopolitical tension the lack of supply potentially out of the middle east. >> we have conagra ceo on cnbc with jim cramer tonight on "mad money." that's at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. eastern time. so you don't want to miss that courtney reagan has a market flash for us. court? >> thanks very much, sue. i know you were talking about the oil markets earlier. we have a connection for you here at the market flash. look at rowen, offshore contractor drirl, the company did issue its monthly status update with regardses to threga did issue its monthly status update with regards to its rigs. >>> consumer confidence rebounding, new highs, multiyear highs, housing on the road

you can see that in the brent crude price as well as brent crude is above $111 a barrel. on the east coast, after hurricane sandy, after the superstorm, refineries returning back to normal. and that is seen in the refinery utilization number. we're now at 87.5% capacity. so that's starting to get back up to normal as well. as these refineries are processing, we are seeing the crude supplies, perhaps, come down but we're also seeing some usage, perhaps, back up. we're all working in a decline here in the products. that is causing a rally in gasoline and heating oil. we're looking at oil prices well supported above $87 a barrel. back to you. >> thank you very much, sharon epperson from the nymex. >>> back to the looming fiscal cliff. if lawmakers don't reach a deal this december, paychecks could shrink for millions of workers. tom, it is amazing. if you take a look at how retailers are doing, what consumer spending is doing, doesn't look like consumers are that worried about the fiscal cliff. but should they? >> well, you know, i'm not so sure about that as a starting point

. >> we think brent will go down 10%, maybe a little more.$90 level for brent, $90 to $100 level. >> why is that? >> we've just gone through almost two year period of really significant amount of disruption, like the embargo against iranian crude. but a lot of it is about a beca had high prices for ten years and the fruits of new investments are coming in and just a lot of oil coming into the market. particularly from north america, but other places, as well. >> what about china? the idea was that china was sort of hoarding oil. are they still doing that? >> they're hoarding in two ve senses before some senses. some is for the strategic stockpile. they'll do another 400 million between now and 2020. >> so how does that compare with -- >> we have 700 million. we don't need it any longer because we're producing so much more oil every year. >> domestically. i saw a chart the other day of oil production and oil exports. could we become a net exporter? >> unlikely, but between the u.s. and canada, we will be a net exporter. and i say between ourse

meaning the price of brent is $23 higher than price of wti. that can be explained by what came out of the report today. there's a shift taking place. obviously supply in the united states is at highs. and cheap oil in general is a very bullish thing for commodities. where cheap oil begins to become a problem like in 08 is if it's associated with weak economic growth. we need to keep that balance very close and watch that as we head throughout the week here. cheryl: john, one thing i will say as a caveat there is that the weather, which is always unpredictable looking like it is going to be a really rough winter, heating oil, things like that, are you making bets in those markets now? >> you know, it is funny because if you look at hurricane sandy and what it's done, i think short-term heating oil, reformulated gasoline, probably a bit of bearish component to some of the issues in terms of getting gasoline to new york city and other areas has really reconciled itself. if you want to take a look at crude in general, the energy space in general,

brent risie ining as well but slightly less than that. >>> nonetheless, energy prices apparently arelower. our next guest is talking 70s on crude for next year. john, why are you so bearish on oil for next year? >> a couple of things. global economy doesn't look all that great for next year particularly in europe. they have a lot to get together, the greece situation. we're also now -- >> it's going to get worse than it is this year. >> yeah. iea, opec itself all looking for demand declines next year in terms of growth. also, two things that bedevilled the brent market this year, troubles out of the north sea, constantly having problems with production. once that comes back online for any length of time, lower prices. similarly, i know all the debate is around the keystone pipeline -- there is a lot of work being done as we speak to get oil from west texas to the u.s. gulf and from cushing, oklahoma and the mid continent -- >> so we're awash in oil. >> but it is landlocked as well. when those pipelines come on in the first, second quarter we could see a real drop in gulf coast prices

then also we saw brent crude prices fall below $110 a barrel. now they're making their way back. why is that? well, traders on the floor are telling me the same thing that white house officials are saying. that is that they're very cautious about this cease fire and whether or not it will hold. that is something that has not removed the geopolitical risk premium from this marketplace. when you think about the trading activity that will happen over the next several days, the fact that the trading floor is closed tomorrow, it will be a half day on friday, that the electronic trading will be at somewhat reduced hours. there's not going the same amount of liquidity. there's not going to be the same amount of participation. that will influence the trade too, perhaps. traders don't want to take any real bets. they don't want to be short this market. we're also looking at the fact that when you look at the week, the month, we're still higher for the price of crude oil. when you look at the premium of brent crude to wti crude futures at $23 plus, it lets you know there's still a great de

we do see brent crude futures above $108 a barrel and wti futures near the $87 mark. we are seeing a continuation of pretty big spread though between these two contracts. traders here on the floor are telling me that's what lets you know it is what is happening in the middle east, it is the iran report, it is also what we are seeing in terms of the oil rig on the gulf that's lifting the oil price. traders do not want to be short going into the weekend. it is a very jittery market here and they are afraid of those positions that they may have that were on the short side. the low in the wti contract was around $85 a barrel earlier this morning. so we have seen a significant rise there. as we're continuing to monitor what's happening there in the gulf of mexico, again it does appear that no production was impacted because there was no production coming from that particular platform. but we are continuing to watch the situation and it just lets you know how generally these markets are, how nervous traders are here going into the weekend. back to you. >>> sharon, thank you

there is a definite line stretching from brent wad to livermore and mess anton and dublin. there is some of this activity lingering back and 580, seat seat split, back to fremont, union city, over to the peninsula, then it washes out a little bit. so there's still a little bit here, but it's about another hour and we'll be done with thank you very much then we'll focus our attention on the next system. that's the one that i think has better potential that will line itself up late thursday afternoon and evening into the north bay. mendocino county, napa, sonoma and marin, that could be there for a while thursday. that could produce some really heavy rain if it doesn't move, if it stalls out. that will sweep over the area late thursday into friday for everybody. that will be the third system in the pattern of the there will be one more on the weekend. for us this system from this morning we're almost done with it. i think things will wind down pretty fast. still some showers, breezy, sun, clouds. rain holding on parts of the east bay, south bay and peninsula. about another ho
