nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live from brentwood. bob, will all students be allowed back on campus? >> reporter: no, not all students. not the 9,500 students who attend one of the eight elementary or three middle schools here in the brentwood union school district because they will be taught 100% online starting july 28th. this decision is coming down from the board last night. this is what's become known as distance learning. i just spoke to the district and they tell me that they are prepared to move a hybrid model if the number of covid cases decline. but right now the plan is 100% online starting july 28th. again, this is starting for the brentwood union school district. we've also learned that the liberty union high school district will be on an every-other-day format with 100% distance learning as an option. they are delaying their opening of school by two weeks. the oakley union elementary school district, just like brentwood, will be 100% distance learning with the option to move to a hybrid schedule when deemed, quote, safe.

the students attend liberty and heritage high schools in brentwood. we learned from school officials one student plays varsity football at heritage high all three were participating in summer conditioning programs with their teams which the health department approved. the superintendent says they were working out in pods 12 athletes per group. only other members of the pods have not shown any symptoms. >> they were not working out together it is completely unrelated. it is a community situation and we think it is a community situation that was brought onto campus. >> it might be a good idea to give the students a choice. you could do online seem classes or go in person for other classes. >> i will take more precaution because there are people who don't know they have it and they could just pass it. >> reporter: the students are supposed to attend school in person every other day starting on august 10th. a lot of students and families tell me they were on the fence about that format. now with these new cases they want the district to do online classes
