i5 americans —— breonna taylor. i3 anything changing? 0ver americans —— breonna taylor.at we have not seen the major change when it comes to the rate of violence and killing against black americans, remember it is not only killing but everyday violence that is an epidemic. so i can imagine one yearfrom now an epidemic. so i can imagine one year from now when we have the ten year anniversary there is going to be a great deal of conversation about the progress or lack thereof on the merits. but i do want to say that we have seen a change in our culture and that cultural change, the way that celebrities and artists, and people around the world think about racialjustice and police violence, there has been a shift and a lot of that as a result of the organising that took place at the beginning of 9 august, 201a, which trayvon martin was killed there before, but this was the time when people took to the streets en masse, used twitter and social media for process organising in a way that we have never seen before, live streaming, and ultimately staying in history is almost 300

following the wave of police reform that swept the country after the killings of george floyd and breonna taylor, los altos established the citizen task force to review police policy, but it was limited to a six-week period. the city council acted on task force recommendations to remove officers from the los altos high school campus and revise the police complaint process. then, according to the plan, the task force ended. >> for me, i saw firsthand how policing could impact the lives of my children. >> dr. tony moz was also on the temporary task force. >> my eldest son, obviously a black man, was pulled over between the ages of 16 and 21/16 times in los altos. >> reporter: rene and tony say that ongoing racial profiling issues and recent police policy actions by the city council had prompted them to call for the return of the task force. >> i understand the concern. >> reporter: in july the council voted to approve the request to bring 15 automatic license plate reader cameras to neighborhoods around town. the cameras, which are used by neighboring communities, have been criticized for sometime

. >> reporter: that's exactly right, breonna taylor we have learned from u.s.ssian and chinese vessels were engaging in joint patrol off the coast of alaska last week, when u.s. northern command did send boats and aerospace and defense commands, sent plans to as well to monitor the movements of the ships. notably, they did say these were operating in international waters and did not pose a threat to the u.s. or canada, but the u.s. senators from alaska, dan sullivan and lisa murkowski, they did raise alarm about the saturday, saying this is, quote, a new era of authoritarian aggression led by the dictators in beijing and moscow. they are clearly concerned about the fact that russia and china are conducting these kind of naval exercises so close to alaska and we are told it was just off the aleutian islands there in the bering strait, but now we are hearing, of course, they did send these assets to kind of monitor their movements . it did not pose a threat, but the chinese embassy did provide us a statement, saying these were joint maritime patrols in relevant w

we saw that spontaneously occur in 2020 in response to the tragic killing of george floyd and breonna taylors. and today, the role of organizing is a very respected one. it always has been recognized, but it's been elevated because i think people understand how important it is to have people ready to be mobilized, to not just ask for change, but to ensure accountability when change happens. i think it's important to realize that technology has allowed, especially a younger generation, not just to be part of a protest, but to help lead it. and i think that's a really important point of this, is that if you look at the murder of george floyd and you see young people around the world utilizing technology to make sure that they're not just involved, but they're leading. and i think that's an optimistic thing as we look to the future. geoff: and bayard rustin believed that the fates of the civil rights movement and the labor movement were intertwined. but the visions of of racial justice and economic justice were linked. do you see it that way? and how does that manifest today? lonnie: -- janai:

we charged for officers tied to the death of breonna taylor.e secured guilty pleas from six former police officers for torturing and abusing to black men in mississippi. this work is one simple principle, no one is above the law in our country. we are prosecuting perpetrators of hate crimes, including the defendant who killed 10 black people at a grocery store in buffalo new york. we secured convictions to get all three men responsible for the tragic killing of ahmaud arbery and the defendant who massacred 23 latinos at a walmart in el paso, texas, and the defendant who killed 11 jewish people at the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. we are challenging discriminatory voting laws to ensure that every american has a voice in our democracy and we are taking on modern day redlining by thanks -- banks and financial institutions. we are fighting to ensure equal access to jobs, housing and more. that cause is a righteous one, it benefits all americans, black, white, latino, aapi. thank you. i promise you the civil rights division wil

and it said now that my side -- has got your attention demand, justice breonna taylor's murderers have not been arrested right. and you know, in case you think just a lili reinhart problem, we talk about in social media, influencer iapetus who similarly took a photo of his head of his abs and said rest in peace floyd right as the caption for instagram photo of his abs and so again i just think i mean these are obviously extreme examples. most people don't do that, but we use it as an illustration for some times when we we're barreling in as allies, kind of do it clumsily stopping to consider, is this really a form of intervention that from the perspective of the people that i'm trying help actually helping them, at least considering those two questions will get you part of the way, deciding how to intervene in these situations. you have to tell the snl, do you want to do it? can jay, or do you want to do it? david the the white savior, yeah. okay. so this is actually my you guys know the white savior sketch from snl itself and you have to go look it up so much. it's sort of late night

it has a real history with breonna taylor. the central part fly, a young man who is -- just killed in central florida we could go. it's got a real history with -- four black boys from central florida who were falsely accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a white woman when they pulled over to help her when the car was broken. the fourth boy who is not pictured here was not apprehended initially. he was actually shot to death by police. a 100% mob wanted to get their hands on the remaining three black boys included, and so they took it out on the predominantly black town, shooting residents, looting, setting fires to their homes. charles greenly, he was sentenced to prison for life. he was 16 years old. just a quick trigger warning here for black death and trauma, but it's an important story to tell when we talk about the two tiered justice system. on the way back from the courthouse, sheriff took it upon himself to shoot the two remaining individuals, walter irvine and samuel shepard. walter irvin actually ended up liv
