i'm bret baier. after a lot of lonely weekends, car dealers around the country are bracing for impact tonight. a government program designed to spark sales and get gas guzzlers off the road is getting a high octane reception from the public. now, white house correspondent wendell goler reports the president is looking for more fuel for this program, despite critics who say this is bad for the country's economic engine. >> who would have thought weeks after two of detroit's big three emerged from bankruptcy some auto dealers would be worried about too much business? >> we have been as bis busy as we have been in years with this program. some dealers have run out of inventory. >> it is the going to be the best weekend the auto industry has seen in 100 years. the cash for clunkers program has been so successful, some dealers sold more than a month's worth of cars in a few days, raising fears that the billion dollars that was supposed to fund the program until the fall might not cover the deals already m

i'm bret baier. while president obama pushes healthcare reform, the unwelcome issue of race has come thanks to comments he made wednesday night. he reacted to the arrest of harvard professor henry louis gates who was charged last thursday with disorderly conduct. wendell goler reports on the policemen, the professor and the president. >> having said he didn't know what role race played in his friend henry gates' arrest, the president weighed in anyway in a primetime news conference. >> i think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry, number two, that the cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home. >> the fraternal order of police reacted sharply, saying in a statement, quote, it's unfortunate that mr. obama chose to say anything. as he traveled the next thing, aides said mr. obama wasn't calling the police officer stupid, but the cooler head should have prevailed once it was clear gates wasn't a burglar. la

i'm bret baier. allegations first made by house speaker nancy pelosi that members of the intelligence community have lied to members of congress have resurfaced, and this time, the current head of the c.i.a. is being dragged into it. correspondent james rosen has the story. >> the fact is that there is a briefing that is of serious concern to members of the committee, and they have their course of action to deal with it. >> and that course of action, for 7 democrats on the house intelligence committee, was to send a scathing letter on june 26 to c.i.a. director lee onpanetta, calling on panetta to retract his statement in may that it is neither the practice or policy of the c.i.a. to mislead the congress. the 7 lawmakers cited a closed-door briefing panetta gave the committee on june 24. the letter said "you testified that you have determined that top c.i.a. officials have concealed significant actions from all members of congress, and misled members for a number of years from 2001 to this week." >>

i'm bret baier. the obama administration made an attempt today to come up with at least a partial answer to one of the biggest questions about its biggest priorities, healthcare reform. chief political correspondent carl cameron looks at who is going to foot the bill. >> vice president joe biden announced an agreement with the nation's hospitals to forego $155 billion in future medicare and medicaid payments to help pay for the president's healthcare reform plan. >> reform is coming. it is on track. it is coming. we have tried for decades, for decades to fix a broken system, and we have never in my entire tenure in public life been this close. >> but the deal is not set in stone. republicans say hospitals were bullied into it, and since the money still goes to healthcare, it's not savings but merely a transfer from old programs to new ones ax frustrated senate majority leader harry reid told fellow democrats behind closed doors last night to abandon bipartisanship. this morning on the senate floor he
