meantime zelenskyy said this to bret baier tonight on special report... >> i think it was not good. i think it was not good because we had a lot of different talks. i'm always open to media but there are very sensitive things. i just want to be honest and i just want our partners to understand the situation correctly. >> trace: he was fighting for security concessions. i'm not sure he got what he wanted. i think in the end it was maybe the wrong strategy. what do you think? >> i think that's an understatement, based on what the outcome was. we saw in the moments following that outburst, trump doubling down on his position. zelenskyy trying to walk it back a bit. not apologizing but saying he's grateful and appreciative. that was the language that senator lindsey graham and other lawmakers urged him to use. of course i think we are all sympathetic to zelenskyy. he's been fighting for years, he's exhausted, he's angry. the reality is that with president trump, we no longer are the world's policeman, or the world's piggy bank. so i think you come into the oval office and you do expect

bret baier, special report. we appreciate you being with us. thanks, bret. all right. here now with more analysis, senior fellow at the hoover institute, victor davis hanson. victor, i want to step back. if you recall, when putin was amassing troops on the border with ukraine, remember that famous moment when biden was asked, what if they invade? what are you going to do now? i would argue prior to that, had joe biden been a strong president, he would have started some type of negotiation and diplomacy. he did not. and then he was asked, what will you do if he invades? and i thought it was inevitable. people that were saying, oh, he's not going, i thought were nuts. and he said, well, it depends if it's just a minor incursion. and at that moment i realized that that to me was a green light to go in. then, you know, 2 or $300 billion, i don't know how much money we ultimately put in a fortune of us money. it seems to me to have evolved into a proxy war between the us and russia, and we became the main source of defense for zelensky. he didn't seem to appreciate that tod

and soon after the oval office exchange, i watched live as zelenskyy sat with bret baier on fox news and answered some appropriate but sharp questions without flinching or offering an apology. here's where i come out. zelenskyy is a mensch. he's a stand up guy with a churchillian spine who's proven wrong. those who said that an actor and comedian was unsuited to go toe to toe with putin. he has. and he and his country are still standing. yes, with the benefit of a lot of american support, vance lit the fuze. he injected himself into the fray, made an argument, then cried foul when zelenskyy offered a rebuttal. and trump, seeing the spotlight, turned toward his number two and a visiting head of state, took control and escalated the language. i don't like that. trump recently excluded ukraine from the meeting with russia in saudi arabia, or that trump incorrectly blames zelenskyy for russia's invasion. and trump was wrong to say that zelenskyy is a dictator. while remaining silent on putin. plus, it was a disgrace. it was a disgrace on monday that in a un vote, the u.s. voted with russ

after being told to leave the white house grounds, zelenskyy spoke with our bret baier where he saidis relationship with the president, president trump, can be repaired. >> i'm not hearing from you, mr. president, a thought that a you owe the president an apology. >> no, i respect president, and i respect american people. and if, i don't know if -- i think that we have to be very open and very honest. and i'm not sure that we did something bad. >> reporter: this morning "the new york post" is reporting zelenskyy's chief of staff had insisted on having that oval office meeting. the push reportedly came as a president trump's special envoy to ukraine and russia, general keith can kellogg, was putting the final touches on that minerals deal. a u.s. official tells "the new york post" kellogg and zelenskyy had agreed to a deal with one item still to be finalized. zelenskyy's chief of staff pushed for the ukrainian president to join trump at the white house to sign the agreement. kellogg advised against it knowing that the relationship between the presidents needed to be strengthened befor

a remarkable exchange there the oval office followed by his interview with our own bret baier where thereas an opportunity for a bit of a cleanup. i just want to get your take the start things off. >> well, good morning, molly, and thank you for having me on. when you really look at it, there was a failure on both sides yesterday. let's face it, the united states is the world leader, and as such both president trump and vice president vance could have comported themselves in a manner where let president zelenskyy act the way he did, but they didn't. president zelenskyy, by the same token -- and we also saw that in bret's interview last night -- didn't read the room. he didn't understand what was going on. at the end of the day, what ukraine is concerned about a, president zelenskyy and others are concerned about more than anything else is security guarantees. clearly, the united states has failed ukraine when we offered assurances in 19 is 94 under president clinton, when we didn't react to the invasion of crimea under obama in 2014 and then after the invasion with president biden in 2022
