commissioner norton: i just wanted to give a shout out to the bret harte community. i visited your classrooms a few months ago with project seed. there were some great things that i saw happening out there. thank you for everything you all are doing out there. president mendoza: deputy superintendent? >> i also want to thank everyone for coming out and sharing some words with us. i want to remind folks that we will be having a committee of the whole next tuesday in which we will discuss the superintendent zone. i want to remind our community that the superintendent zone is not something being done to you. it is this district's commitment to rectify the historic underserved communities in our district. this board took a phenomenal step forward when they said that our children have been historical rate underserved. as we speak, you are 20 times more likely to be identified as the special education child if you are an african american male. that is not right. we have students proficient at 12%. that is not right. what about the 88% of students in those schools that are

we have actually started a now pathway at the bay view hunter's point neighborhood at bret harte. soee there are some other school sites that are interested in developing additional pathways as well. we have also highlighted here some of the recruitment and retention efforts for yale students as well. through the site support, we have done a number of presentations with d-lack and began to look at the alignment with the child development program. so assuming that -- that we have full classes, the cost of -- we wanted to take a look at the cost of all middle school students if they were to have a seventh class or period. it would be approximately 5.57 million annually. this number can be phased in, as language programs where built. so i think there are ways -- there's way that is we can begin to phase it in. even given the fact that we're in a budget crisis. we're exploring our approaches. perhaps prioritizing english learners and dual language programs. there's a critical need for that. in the middle schools, when we did place the programs of particular sites, one heavy considerat

two attend bret harte elementary. two attend george washington parliamentary. i chose them because of the repetition in our neighborhood. there was a grant. 50% of our teachers had to leave and we had to lose our principal. we would love you to stop the superintendent's office from making independent come up arbitrary decisions on policies and programs that affect our children's lives without our participation. in the bayview, we live to survive. we have enough going on. to have decisions made for us on behalf of our children is deeply unfair. it is just not right. we want to stop the superintendent zone policy until parents, teachers, and community members can come together. schools have been able to come up with a transformation plan that reflects the value and culture, the proper representation of culture in our communities. i want to celebrate the national board of teachers. i thought that was awesome. that is fantastic. i am so proud. but how many of the teachers have even been encouraged to participate in those programs? we would love to stand in here wit
