what's in it for the craft brewers? >> it certainly gives them additional advantages in the marketplace, distribution and retailers that they wouldn't have to an independent brewer. it creates challenges for regional craft brewers going head to head in the same real retail channels and the larger ones. >> reporter: but how does the consumer feel when one of their local and independent and craft brands cash in by selling to a macro brewer? >> it will hurt their image a little bit as a craft brewery that has sold out to a larger brewery. but overall, i think if the beer still speaks volume to what they are doing, i think it is still good beer. >> reporter: with a record 5,200 brewers competing, it's fierce. consolidating craft brewers is one way companies eliminate competition. skull says the craft companies aren't going head-to-head. >> a direct competitor is not necessarily or craft brewery friends down the street. it's more of the big macro. it's a rising tide lifting all ships. >> while big brewers have a lot to offer

tap has become the second largest largest brewer in america. management is now forecasting $550 million in total cost sales for 2019. it's last quarter sales was not so hot. here's the thing. while i really do like this, i like the miller coors deal, the fact is that taps volume has been steady declining for years, and the domestic beer industry has been declining. but at this point it's all about the fact that they bought the miller coors for a song. it's not the kind of organic growth that money managers salivate over. i expect it to go up actually, but not like consolation did, speaking of consolation brands, which in addition to its major beer biz plus sells a lot of fine wines, this company is nothing like it's competitors. consolation brands are on fire. including terrific mexican beers like magello and corona, and we had a hard time keeping in stock, pacifica, which is not a premium beer in mexico, it has become the hot beer inn among young people in this country. it's made a bunch of craft beer act which is tigss, and these other buers

local brewers here at the craft brewers conference says there's still room to grow, because this industry is different than most, where it's not about loyalty about just one brand. craft drinkers are loyal to craft beer in general, going out of their way to get their hands on that one unique brew. a win for one is a win for all. economists say it's also an opportunity to invest. >> what investors are looking for is return. and in a fast-growing space, we are seeing many craft brewers who are growing rapidly, and in the short to medium term can offer growth for investors. >> even as craft is slowing down, private equity firms like ab inbev and coors are still making investments in the segment. in ra ma market where overall b sales are flat, craft remains an opportunity. are these all going to consolidate? are people just going to go back to drinking bud light? >> we're seeing a lot of consolidation in the field. the thing about being craft, you have to be small. you have to have the craftiness, per se. that makes it so crafty. the problem is that they need the distribution. that's why you'
