. >> joining me now from minneapolis is respondent shaquille brewster. jury selection so far. >> reporter: court is in recess right now for that lunch break, but the big headline we heard today was what you just played right there, the defense attorney of kim potter saying she will take the stand for this trial once it begins in ernest. we are several days from that if that is to come. right now we're in that jury selection process and so far three members of the jury have been selected so far. the jurors will remain anonymous, even being sequestered when deliberations begin. one of the men was actually a rock star before covid happened, according to what he testified in court. despite the testimony in this trial from the beginning, selective jurors have been dismissed as a part of this process. a handful were dismissed today, but several were dismissed before the trial started. it's just part of the tension this trial is facing. and listen to what we heard yesterday. >> the question is, are we prepared to hold a white officer accountable for killing a y

joining us from kenosha, shaquille brewster. shaq, can you give us a sense of what the scene looked like in and around the courtroom today? >> reporter: well, joy, you saw a steady flow of protesters outside of the courtroom about two dozen or so they about an hour or so went around kenosha or at least this downtown area marching. i should also note it's not just protesters or people who are protesting against kyle rittenhouse but you also have people who are here to support kyle rittenhouse and say he was acting in his self-defense and saying that he was the victim in this case. we do know that in just the past couple of moments, joy, the court is out of session. the jury broke. they are going home for the night. they will return at 9:00 a.m. central time tomorrow. they deliberated or at least have been away for about eight hours today as part of their deliberations and we didn't get that many tea leaves from the messages and the notes that came from the jury. we did get a sense of earlier in the day that they did ask for more

shaquille brewster is covering the trial from kenosha. shaquille, what is the latest there?continue through day three that we're on. we have not gotten any update about the jury. they are continuing their deliberations. we did see the judge take the stand or come to the bench earlier today for an unrelated matter. this was outside of the presence of the jury. he responded to a report that we got from the kenosha police department last night saying that a member of the media was suspected of following the jury van after court yesterday. the judge named a member from msnbc, he said he's taking this extremely seriously. he went on to say that he is investigating this further. and we also know that he's banning members from msnbc, any msnbc personnel from the courthouse at this time. now, an nbc spokesperson released a statement, let's put that up on the screen right now. it says, last night a freelancer received a traffic citation. while the traffic violation took place near the jury van, the freelancer never contacted or intended to contact the jurors during deliberations, and

i prosecute all the bad guys on either side of the dispute. >> and shaq brewster, what is going on insha? we know that the national guard is at least prepared in case if there's a verdict this week, there are some protests. >> yeah. you have those 500 members of the national guard that have been activated and a handful of protesters outside and a large media presence. this is something people in kenosha have been watching own waiting for closely. this is something they know. they experienced it before. we know last year what this town and what this community went through. this is definitely going to be a focus there. and people are waiting for the trial to essentially be wrapped up. one thing we got that we learned from the arguments this morning is a little bit of the sense of timing over when this can actually be wrapped up. the judge took a poll of the jury, 20 members or 19 now of the jury panel there, and asked if closing arguments, if those closing arguments wrap up around 4 p.m. or 5:00 p.m., would you want to start deliberations now or is that something you want to wait and st

shaq brewster is joining us now. talking to you about and how big is this police issue which is clearly dividing the politicians there? >> for them it is a big thing. this is something their taking extremely seriously. this is a local election that would be a big deal under normal circumstances. now you also have this police ballot question and let's break down that ballot question. ballot question number two and it goes to see, it proposes the idea of eliminating the police department and replacing it with a department of public safety. that would go away. there would be no exclusive control over the department and the minimum funding requirement for the department would go away. there would be a new public safety commissioner. the mayor will split control with the city council, and the idea is that it will start a conversation about the process of figuring out how they want to have their public safety infrastructure. they're asking that people vote no, but for advocates that sign petitions, they have 20,000 signatu

shaquille brewster is on the ground.hat's been a long time. you've seen this debate essentially from start to today. here we are 15 months later. what are you seeing and how has it evolved in minneapolis, this debate over police reform? >> good point that you make, chuck n te chuck, in terms of how we saw it in the beginning. in this park you saw a majority of council members take the stage and say they would defund and dismantle the minneapolis police department, now it's a polling location that people are going into and they'll have that question over whether they want to shift policing in this city. let's break it down for our viewers. yes, you mentioned, it does eliminate the minneapolis police department and it replaces it with a bigger department of public safety. what does that mean? the chief of police position, that will go away. the mayor will no longer have exclusive control over the department and there will be a minimum funding requirement that's eliminated. that's in the city's official governing documents.

today governor brewster made it clear once again -- >> if you have been vaccinated and it has been six months, now you can get a booster shot, 18 and over. california is the first state to say, get a booster shot. they are in abundance. luz: the vaccines may be in abundance, but making an appointment has been difficult for many. california has a more generous booster policy than the cdc, but myturn website was not even ready for the expansion. today they announced booster shot appointment through their site will be available starting thursday. >> this was a decision without much notice, and, there were, the wonderful people that helped maintain these websites are not able to quickly pivot as quick as we would want. luz: another setback -- to get a booster shot, the cdc says some needs to check one of these criteria is: to be 65 or older, have an underlying medical condition, in a long-term care facility or be at high risk at work. pharmacies like cvs and walgreens are following what the cdc recommends, creating a disconnect for californians. . which means counties across the bay area a

shaquille brewster is in minneapolis with the latest. shaq, walk us through what happened.und the police branding hurt something that could have actually been good for the city? >> reporter: it was certainly a factor, steph. even opponents of this amendment acknowledge that the amendment did not directly defund the police, but the truth is, that phrase was wrapped up in the entire conversation and it's really what led to that amendment being on the ballot in the first place. and steph, i got a text message from a voter who was undecided this morning that i have to read for you. she's someone who has been in this city for 35 years, a black woman who said she was undecided, even after collecting signatures to help get this amendment on the ballot. and she told me yesterday that in the voting booth, she said, quote, i went back and forth on it and that's the same sentiment i heard from so many people, where i had so many people who said they voted "no" on this measure. that they wanted reform but they were uncomfortable with the idea of supporting a department that was largely
