according to one analyst the stock could struggle when the company reports earnings tomorrow after the bell. brianhite of cantor fitzgerald gave us the lowdown on what he'll be watching from hp. take a listen. >> brian white with cantor fitzgerald for "fast money's" earnings edge. hp reports third quarter results tomorrow after the close. three things that we're looking for. number one is trends in the pc and printer market. both areas in my view are being commoditized. pc had a very rough july in the supply chain. it will be interesting to hear data points out of that area. second point is enterprise group. there's a dogfight going on as companies push into the cloud. markets overseas are weakening considerably. it will be interesting to see how far they're trading in the enterprise group outside the u.s. market. and third point would be their earnings guidance for the fourth quarter and their cash flow update for the year. i do think the outlook will be a bit soft for the fourth quarter given all the trends that we've discussed. at the end of the day this is a stock that i think will remain chal

bell rings. chief market strategist, brian, the last few minutes in each final hour this week have been rock 'n'wild. do you expect that today and what are you really bracing for next week? >> well, next week is most typically going to be a pretty slow week, especially considering it's the last week in august and we have the holiday coming up. but, you know -- with the markets improving clearly over the last several years that august tends to be a pretty volatile month. that's why the market hits bottom on monday, we felt pretty informant putting out our report that a bottom was in place, given the fact that this is pretty normal activity. i don't know about you, but i'm pretty exhausted after this week because, you know, volatility is all about uncertainty, uncertainty continues to climb, and we've got a lot of things to worry about over the intermediate term. but from a longer term perspective, we remain in our belief that the u.s. stock market is six years into a 20-year bull market. and we believe that opportunities like this come around only every few years in terms of picking off stocks af

bell" exchange. a volatile day already, john brady from rjr. brian is back and david and kenny from o'neill security is with us at post nine at the new york stock exchange. john, what a day. on one hand we've got the empire state manufacturing number that just killed the market in the open and then the home builder sentiment brought it back again. what's the market trying to tell us here? >> well, bill, i think we want to be careful, right. the third monday in august and average vols or vols today are running 66% less than their 15-day moving average. your bigger picture is that the market is unsure of things here. in light of last week's china devaluation, some of the manufacturing export numbers as seen in the empire number were not just depressing, they were very depressing actually, whereas the home builder sentiment a sentiment number, a survey number, was stronger than expected. we have a to and from, going back and forth in the market and it only heightens sensitivity to asset prices ahead of an important mid-september fomc meeting. >> which d

brian. >> melissa's out there, thank you. >> that does it for us. thanks for watching. >> i think "closing bell" starts now. there you go. >> welcome to the "closing bell." what a day it's been in markets, everybody. kelly evans a the the new york stock exchange. >> i don't even have a quarter in my pocket. i'm bill griffith. we were trying to decide. joking on twitter, do we lead with the decline in oil or the fed minutes today? they've had big impact. both of them, on the markets today. the dow was down 229 points, then charged back after the fed minutes came back out. and now we're lower again, down 165 points at this hour. you did have those leaked fomc minutes in the 1:00 p.m. eastern time hour. came out 20 minutes earlier than anticipated. it showed no clear sign of whether the fed would hike rates in september. we have steve liesman standing by to break down that data for us coming up. >> you know, i was going to say, these are two sides of the same coin in a way. speaking of breaking down, take a look at oil, it's down more than 4% today, it's trading below $41 a barrel. we're watching to see if it

brian sullivan. we are less than 90 minutes away from the opening bell on wall street. take a look at the futures. open lower this morning. nasdaq looking to open about seven and a half points down. check out markets in europe overnight. here's what's going on. the dax off a little more than 1%. all of that keying off a little bit of what was a roller coaster ride in asia overnight. in the meantime, we have earnings. >> target just out with its numbers. it looks like the company is coming in with numbers well above expectations. profit of $1.22 a share that beats the street's expectations by 11 cents. street was only looking for $1.11. they are also raising their full-year guidance. they say they are looking for full year earnings of 4$4.60 to $4.75 a share. it's above the estimates at $4.62. taking a look at what they say, they say revenue was slightly above forecast for this quarter. sales did register a slightly better than expected increase. and maybe what's key with some of this, especially after what we heard from wal-mart yesterday, where they struggled on some of these issues. they say tha
