. >> and a view from brian kelly joining the fray you. what are you buying today?mentioned the housing names and really interesting and might think that the fha news is a little bit but housing is so big an such a huge part of the economy that to me that's starting to say if the government is once again going to support the housing market then those names could rip particularly with lower interest rates and the fmoc minutes matter, not three weeks ago but the state we are in now. they talked about inflation expectations needing to go back to 2%. since the meeting, inflation expectations have continued to fall. that says to me the fed's going to start talking down the dollar. you need to start preparing for a weaker dollar here. >> that's what larry mcdonald told us. >> great minds think alike, kelly. >> okay. hold that thought for a second because we want to incorporate the themes with the next guest bringing us his predictions for 2015. bob doll, chief equity strategist. welcome. >> thank you. >> what is your view, first housing and then the dollar next year. this

strong dollar is a harder dollar to earn. >> let's get back to brian kelly on this point. his morning wrote something that caught my eye. you said if the federal reserve in the u.s. is concerned about contagion and global deflation, it has to talk down the u.s. dollar. why? >> first of all, let me say i'm not necessarily advocating that, but it's the only tool they have. a weaker dollar gets commodity prices higher. we've seen that a lot. now that you're starting to see inflation expectations you have to be thinking at the fed they are panicked at this point. what do we do? we can't lower rates anymore. the only thing we can do is talk the dollar down and they can do that two ways. either explicitly saying something like strong dollar is hurting -- is causing lower inflation expectations or they can just push the time frame out on when they're going to raise rates and we started to see that with charlie evans the other day. >> that's what i was wondering, kevin, how you would react. we hear about the importance of the strong dollar and king dollar. that's larry kudlow's fav

we're joined by brian kelly. what is interesting about the price action is, yes, we saw a huge increase, but it still didn't reach even the bottom end of the range. >> a couple things. the fact that they were approached and it didn't happen concerns me a little bit. what happened when they had the conversation with them. why didn't it go through, can they want more money. is there something else in the picture. ooi i'm not sure. i do think there is more value to it. there is value to the software, to the at that time tents in this company. that being said, somewhere around $13 to $15, pie target was $15. tomorrow morning, i have some 12 calls. actually i have 15 calls that expire this friday. if there is any value in those, i'll sell them. 12 calls i'll probably get out of, as well. >> this is a question, why would john chen want to sell blackberry at such an early stage in the turnaround. the guy is relatively new. >> headline is approach, right? >> that's true. >> so i approached a lot of people in the '80s. it

the co-aink o of squawk valley and brian kelly. let's kick things off the score card of the 29% of the s&p 500 firms reporting so far. 70% reported above estimates. 10% met estimates. 19% reported below estimates. let's kick it right off here with the big one after the bell, john, and that would be facebook. >> facebook. well, if are you looking for 3.77 billion in revenue. 49 cents, i think it is, in eps adjusted two big factors here. one is currency. unlike some other companies last quarter facebook talked about currency at 7% euro drop, and they factored that in to this quarter. it fell a lot more since then. in order for facebook to overcome that, they're going to need to see an iphone-like quarter for them. what that would mean is such strong demand among retailers over the holidays for facebook's targeted advertising that they were able to have a whole lot of pricing power. that is possible. discounting happens so much, and retailers are having such a hard time at the end. we'll have to see that come through to balance things

brian kelly is going to sashay and look why reknewable identification numbers used to track each gallon of fuel produced or imported into the u.s. take it away. >> so, as you mentioned, these are basically ethanol units in gasoline. so when you go to the pump, see it says 10% ethanol, you know, that means that 10% of the barrel is filled with ethanol, that's the mandate. blenders have to put this in. this is an input cost into gasoline. so input cost goes up, gasoline is going to go up. we have a chart here of the rins, i guess we don't there. we have the chart perhaps there. basically, you're starting to see these rind prices go up and what's happening with that is input costs are going up, gasoline margins are going to get squeezed. last time we saw this was back in july 2013. that was when oil was at 95 a barrel. within the next month, oil went up 15% to $110 a barrel. where are we now? all the way here. starting to see that increase. that's one thing starting to tell me, you know what, the bottom of oil is very close. i don't know if it's tomorrow, i'd look for reversal, but this is

. >> highwey jeff, brian kelly. they were complaining they couldn't make money. now too much volatility, they can't make any money. they're not going to make any money on the loan side, potentially have some issues with the energy side. is there ever an environment these banks can make money? it seems like they have an excuse every quarter. >> it's a little bit of be careful what you wish for. at the end of 2013 it was really quiet, hardly any volatile. great. second half of 2014 will be easy trading comparisons. lo and behold, we're down again. i think that's true. what these guys need is they need intra-day volatility. they need prices to move around intra-day in a trend, be it up or down. what hurts them is these big gapping moves where you get treasures in the equity market downs 5.6% in a day. that's what really hurt the fourth quarter. the first couple of week, you had volatility spike, volume spike and big moves. if you're a market maker, you're typically committing capitals. you take marks in that position. outside of early october, the trading environmen

david kelly with jp morgan funds, brian kelly, and our senior economics reporter steve liesman here withthrough the fed decision as well. david, first to you. your expectation from the federal reserve. >> do you expect a change from the federal reserve's wording? >> i think it's just if they stick with the language about being patient? that's the key thing now. it was there last time as an add-on. it probably can't be dropped. the rest of this i think is pretty much not a big event. point point out, it's not a big event, you're right, but i think it should be. either the market or the fed is increasingly off sides here when it comes to expectations. we just found in our sur way that the market now really sees on average a september rate hike, not a june or july one. when you look at the fed fund futures market predicting 45 basis points for the end of december 2015 this year and the average fed projection at 1.12%, that's nearly three-quarter point hiked. look, we're going to readjust for sure in march, but you are talking about a rubber band snapping back. i don't think the fed is going

b.k., brian kelly, ready with his brightest idea. >> this is one over the last couple of days have come up with some catalysts here. first of all, we had president obama talking today about reducing the mortgage insurance premiums. that will be a tail wind for the market for the housing market. next is what guy talked about g-swiz l, he gets a new name. saying it would be a catastrophe to raise interest rates at this point. i completely agree. i think the fed is in a point where they're going to have to start talking down the oil. talking down rates, or at least keeping rates level, and that will be very good for the housing market. so my pick is, then, home construction, etf, not the xhb, but the itb, more of the construction names in there as opposed to the retail names. why do i like it? because right now, reminds me of 2011. down here, that's when the federal reserve sent a note to the treasury and to the congress saying the housing market is the most important thing for us to support. what happened over the next year? you had this major rip in 2012. then, you had a year of going no

environmentalists oppose, setting up a showdown with the white house, brian, which the -- which says the president will wrok that with his veto power. >> kelly o'donnell on the hill for us, thanks. >>> across this country, while gas prices have been very easy to take of late, the bigger story of plummeting oil prices hasn't been all good news. the dow has dropped 461 points in just these last two days and plummeting energy prices are a big reason for what's happening to wall street. and while people are saving money in the short-term, it could cause some hurt in the long run. we get our report tonight from nbc's tom costello. >> reporter: from coast to coast it's the talk at the tank. 46% of the country's stations are now selling gas for $2 or less. >> the price is so low, it's unbelievable. >> that commute was really hurting my pocket. happy i can take $2 a gallon now. >> reporter: put simply the bottom has fallen out of the oil market now sell are for under $50 a barrel, a 5 1/2-year low. it means the typical family will likely save $500 to $700 per car this year. blame it on the oil glut with saudi arabia refusing to turn off the spigot.
