brian moore live in washington with why this meeting is so important. ng, brian. >> reporter: hi, laura. going into today's meeting president obama was unusually blunt. he said the debt ceiling shouldn't be a gun held to the heads of the american people. each side has its position staked out here but going into this meeting a little over two hours away it does look like there is some softening to the republicans especially in the controversial sticking point area of getting rid of some tax loopholes. eric cantor who walked out of the last set of talks says he will be willing to consider cutting some of those loopholes, something the republicans before called essentially a tax increase. it looks like democrats may get some of what they want, republicans are going to want cuts. president obama says he is willing to do it apparently in the hot button issues of social security and medicare. we'll find out what comes out of that later. >> thank you, brian. families are holding onto to hope that seven missing fishermen are still alive in the city of cortez. re

brian moor is live to tell us what is supposed to happen today.g. >> we're talking about a deadline two weeks and a day away. a lot has to be done before congress can even vote on a plan. what's going to happen first is we're going to vote on plans, see congress voting on plans that are going to go nowhere. tea party republicans want to see a vote on a balanced budget amendment so that they will get that. that won't have the votes to pass but what it will do is give these conservatives a chance to go back to their constituents and say we tried, we did the right thing, we didn't have the votes to make it happen. we went with a compromise. a few minutes ago tim geithner says that he does believe there is progress, that there is a path forward that there are people talking here in washington. and it is moving in the right direction. but exactly how it's all going to come together in the next two weeks and a day, nobody can say. marla. >> thank you, brian. the rush is on to protect a damaged nuclear reactor in japan. a typhoon is bearing down on the p

brian moore has more now from capitol hill. >> hi, joe.head of today's meeting, president obama was unusually blunt. he said that the debt ceiling should not be a gun held to the heads of the american people. well, going in to today's meeting, each side had some firm demands. but republicans are showing some signs of softening on what has been a key sticking point. and that is ending some of the big tax loopholes. house majority leader eric cantor, who walked out of the last round of talks, now says he is willing to talk about closing some of those loopholes in return for a bigger picture compromise. republicans don't want to raise taxes. democrats want to raise revenue somehow. president obama and speaker john boehner will really be the most important voices in the room here. it will be up to them to convince skeptibles in their own party that whatever comes out of this will end up being a fair deal. joe? >> brian, thanks very much. >>> a court ruling in california may end "don't ask, don't tell." the federal appeals court in san francisc
