brian stafford believes a swift investigation would help the agency recovery, but says it must be fair. >> you have to let no stone be unturned to make sure you get to the truth of what happened down there before you can really take the actions that are necessary to take. >> reporter: the scandal erupted last week when a colombian prostitute accused a secret service agent of refusing to pay his full bill and called the police. u.s. investigators are in colombia interviewing possible witnesses. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. >> the scandal also involved ten military personnel and as many as 20 women. by the way, prostitution is legal in colombia. >>> rocker ted nugent will meet with secret service agents today following a tirade he made against president obama at an nra convention. nugent said if president obama gets reelected, quote, i will be either dead or in jail by this time next year. nugent is known for his extreme right wing views on a number of issues. >>> top u.s. officials are strongly condemning published photos that appeared to show american soldiers posing

. >> reporter: but brian stafford, a former director and veteran of more than 30 years with the service, says these incidents are isolated, and the agency is still as sound as its historic reputation. >> the vast majority of our people, again, are dedicated, hardworking professionals. and it doesn't look anything like what we've seen on the news for the last few days. >> reporter: now, prostitution is legal in parts of colombia, but the police and the u.s. embassy became aware of this situation when with two secret service personnel had a dispute over paying one of the prostitutes. brian? >> kristen welker at the white house for us tonight. kristen, thanks. >>> there was something special in the skies today from florida, north to washington along the east coast. it stopped traffic and it brought people out their homes and offices. it was a final farewell for the space shuttle "discovery," latched to the top of a 747, flying around as if to waive good-bye on its way to retirement at the smithsonian. turns out "discovery" had one more mission left in it, as nbc's anne thompson reports. >>

. >> reporter: brian stafford is the former director of the secret service. he has protected six presidents and told us that agents and officers are formally brief on the dangers of the soliciting prostitutes. so to be clear-- agents have been briefed regularly. >> oh, yes. >> reporter: that prostitution can be dangerous because of potential espionage or blackmail. >> they're briefed regularly on that, yes. it's a universal briefing that's been given as long as i can remember and there's no doubt everybody going on that trip representing our government in that presidential contingent is aware of that and aware you can't do that, and, obviously, they should be aware of the consequences if you do. >> reporter: now, this investigation is far from over. of the 11 agents and officers who are accused of misconduct, tonight we know three are gone, and the other eight remain under investigation, and have had their security clearances suspended. >> pelley: and the pentagon continues its investigation for its personnel. norah, thanks very much. in the race for the whit

brian stafford, appointed by president clinton, was removed as director and someone brought in from thede. does it appear the secret service will have the same problems now it was having back then? >> i don't believe so. i have tremendous respect for the secret service. i work with them regularly in washington and in new york. i follow their activities and -- >> how do you explain this, then? >> listen, any operation you're going to have some people do the wrong thing. you have 5,000, 6,000 people doing a great job and 10 or 11 do the wrong thing, whether in politics, law enforcement or the media, some people do the wrong thing. on balance they do an outstanding job and they're in a class by themself. >> are you going to suggest holding hearings into this incident? >> yeah. i'm going to have my staff do a preliminary investigation and we'll probably have a hearing. one way or the other we'll find ow what happened, why, what action was taken and what's going to be done to ensure it can't happen again. >> congressman peter king, good to talk to you this evening. thank you for joining us.

however we spoke with brian stafford, former director of the secret service, who said that this absolutelyy depends on the perspective you're looking at. but this is such a central question, chris, because if you speak with folks within the administration, they say the answer it this question could determine what happens to the director of the secret service, mark sullivan. if it turns out this is isolated, he might have a lang future. if not, he might be in trouble in this instance. so they want to get to the bottom of this. what is fascinating is that right now you have members on both sides of the aisle, and the administration, standing firmly behind the director saying he responded quickly, in the appropriate way. he brought the men home, stripped them of security clearance. so right now, they are standing firmly behind them. it there are just a few voices who are saying maybe there need to be an overhaul. within the agency. but once they have those answers, that will determine who stays and who goes essentially. >> great report kristin welker. thanks for joining us. now, elijah cummin

>> oh, i think you're exactly right brian stafford has protected six presidents. the agency is looking to conduct a fair but swift investigation. >> the secret service is the ones to get behind them probably more than anybody else does at this point. i mean, this attention is negative and it's not good. it is not reflective of the secret service and its people. >> reporter: officials from the agency spent another day on capitol hill wednesday answering questions. >> heads have to roll. if people aren't fired in this town, nothing changes. >> reporter: congress is demanding action. in fact, there will be hearings on capitol hill next wednesday. >> what's the worst fear the secret service has about this investigation? >> reporter: well, the biggest fear is that this is not an isolated incidents. there are reportedly 20 women who are involved with 11 secret service members and 10 military personnel. congress is asking questions about maybe this didn't just happen in colombia, but part of a pattern of behavior that government officials engage in when they're overseas.
