let's go to our senior media correspondent, brian stelter. before i ask you about that progress report there are new developments today about a meeting at an apartment of one of the execs. >> i can report that brian williams sat down with the head of all of nbc universal, the ceo. he runs all the cable channels all the broadcast stations that nbc owns. we don't know what the outcome of the meeting was. we know they left together and appeared knob eded to be in good spirits. this is significant because on sunday burke had an emergency meeting with his nbc news executive leadership at his apartment as well. so now we know basically this has reached the top of nbc with brian williams and the ceo. now we wait to see what happens. frankly, this looks pretty bad for brian williams. it's hard for me to imagine a scenario where this is going to end well for him. but anything is possible and very few people know what's actually going on. >> what's the progress report of this internal investigation? >> last night williams was not in the room for this bu

let's go to brian stelter in new york. did we learn much more from that stars and stripes interview which was released on monday? >> there were a couple of take aways. and one is that there is still confusion about what really happened on this mission. several soldiers have told stars and stripes that they heard exaggerated versions of his story on iraq on nbc within weeks of it happening in 2003. we can't find those videos or transcripts. they're not available. but if in fact that exists it will be pretty damning for brian williams. he denies ever exaggerating the story in 2003. in my view nbc did not understand what a crisis this was going to become. because on wednesday, last wednesday, he was asked are you going to apologize on air? we know you're going to apologize on facebook, but are you going to apologize on air? he said i don't know. i'll talk to my boss. it suggests that a few hours later he did apologize on air. this was not a coordinated strategy. they didn't know how controversial this would become. >> histori

that was very helpful, brian stelter.why this is a win for consumers that net neutrality is in. >> reporter: well it may be a win for consumers. it may be a win because it ensures there won't be winners and losers. some startup, the next netflix is able to exist on the internet without being in a slow lane but really as i was describing that package, these are mostly theoretical concerns right now. it's not like comcast, verizon, at&t whoever you get your broadband from is slowing down your service in order to hurt its rivals and help itself. what the government is trying to do is put rules in place to avoid that in the future. these companies like comcast have concerns. they say it will get lit i galtigated by the courts. they are worried about price controls. the fcc says that's not the plan but that's the kind of dispute that will still be going on in the years to come. >> as far as like let's say my internet service, it's just as fast as netflix's internet service and that's really what this does right? it guarantees

joining us now to break it down is brian stelter. so an open internet what does it mean for folks? >> it's basically addressing a largely hypothetical theoretical danger to the future of the internet george. but it's something that's been theorized about for more than a decade. there's a professor at columbia university who started talking about this 13 years ago, and today it reached the highest levels of the u.s. government. it will also over time affect other governments how they regulate the internet. these rules are intended to stop companies like comcast and verizon and at&t from creating fast and slow lanes on the internet. those companies say they have no interest of doing that but these rules intend to stop them from trying to do that in the future. essentially, they're applying land line phone type regulations to the broad band internet. they're taking laws from the 1930s and applying them to this 21st century technology. here's what netflix said. they said consumers win. the net neutrality debate is about who picks winners and losers online. today, the fcc settled it con

professor of broadcast journalism at the university of maryland and our senior media correspondent brian stelteree you. you said to "the new york times," i don't know how he can ever read the news with a straight face or how the public will respond if he does. what the do you make of this? >> well credibility is a fragile thing. he lost it. by his own admission, he lied. from nbc's statement, it appears he may have lied multiple times and multiple exaggerations. it will be hard to turn the clock back to the traditional credibility he had. >> if it was just this instance six months without pay seems like a pretty harsh penalty there. is there a sense that there is more out there? there's another shoe to drop? >> there is a sense. i don't know if it's an entire shoe but there's a sense there is more coming that nbc found that deserves further scrutiny and requires more fact checking. they've been fact checking for several days. a whole team at nbc has been doing it. they've been talking to soldiers on that iraq war mission but also people involved in hurricane katrina aftermath that brian williams
