let's talk to cnn senior media correspondent, brian stelter.go today, we were talking about the tweets that came out. there were five of them and the president spoke as fact that he had heard that indeed that his predecessor had wiretapped him. so what is the feeling about why this was done? was this intentionally to distract? >> certainly is, president trump is critical of the press. we know that. we see that all the time, but you wouldn't normally call them press-shy, at least this week. he has been press shy. he's been avoiding answering questions about the wiretapping allegations or other topics, situations where the press is brought into the room for a photo op. he won't answer. or today down at the golf course in virginia, he made a few comments at the cameras but avoided any situations he's actually being interviewed or answering questions. i think or the president not on camera at all. that's not normal for the 50 or 100 days when there's so much going on. what we see is an attempt to shield him a little bit from some of the topics that

and brian stelter, host of "reliable sources." great to have you on. brian, you have brand new reporting. what are you hearing? >> following up on what athena was sharing about president trump's mood this weekend. speaking via e-mail with the ceo of news max. it's one of the conservative news outlets that's within covering trump. he was with trump twice on saturday. he's never seen the president this angry. at least not in a long time. he described the president's mood as pissed, so that's backing up the reporting from athena jones about what the president has been saying to his friends and associates this weekend in florida. he said where is the president getting this information about this idea of a wiretap against him. there's no evidence for it at all. so he said he does not know for sure. but what he was describing lines up exactly with what breitbart pu published on friday. others have said it seems the president's source was the conservative radio host mark levin, and a story about these wiretap ideas and the broader idea of the administration un

. >> brian stelter is with us on the other story on a much more serious note, brian, as we were justp. talking about how the white house press secretary sean spicer has not held an on-camera briefing in a week. tell us why that matters and why it's not just the media complaining. >> it's all about messaging and in fact, this video of president trump coming in right now. his choice to come on camera and surprise people on camera. he's trying to get his maemgimeg grade up. he gave himself a c for messaging but "a" for achievement. the "c" seemed to be a critique of his press office and sean spicer. also a critique of himself. so the president perhaps trying to be more selective, more careful in his messaging. maybe taking saturday morning's tweet storm as the exception to that rule. no on-camera briefings from sean spicer. off camera sessions with reporters. this is a way to control the message, to make it about trump and not about what spicer is saying from the podium. later today we'll see spicer on camera for a briefing for the first time in eight days. >> it's interesting. people a

let's discuss this with senior media correspondent brian stelter and greg valliere. thanks both of you. let's start with you, brian. walk me through the evidence trail here of where the president got this idea. we are talking about a web site on a radio show and another web site and in the president's brain and on twitter. >> this seems to start on thursday. an idea for a while that president obama is doing whatever he can do to undermine new president trump. mark levine took this to a new level. saying a silent issue. then rush limbaugh and breitbart. rece published a story and circulated in the west wing. according to jeff zeleny, this infuriated president trump. we saw him tweet about it. he said he just found on about the theory and shared it on twitter. the best evidence shows this was coming from mark levine and breitbart. they have seucceeded. saying this is all obama's fault. >> this is a president who derides media reports using anonymous sources. this man based on anonymous sources. greg, it is one thing how big a story it is if it is true. what about if it
