joining me now to discuss cnn's chief media analyst, brian stelter. brian, good to see you. first, i just want to get your take on all of this. >> i think this wall street journal editorial speaks to the frequent divide within the cnn ranks. maga loyalists, maga influencers have been ecstatic about kash patel for the past 24 hours. absolute joy about this appointment whereas more old school republicans right establishment types like wall street journal editorial writers, they are the ones more cautious, more concerned. right now, this is a very familiar divide. i would say lately in the new trump era. we've been seeing the maga loyalists win, and the journal editorial board types lose, but not every time. of course, we remember the matt gaetz episode just a couple of weeks ago. >> yeah, yeah. and some of the concerns here stem from this interview which was from 2023. kash patel saying he'd go after journalists if appointed to a role in the trump administration. we can listen to that we will go out and find the conspirators, not just in government but in the media. >> yes, we

. >> let's discuss this now with cnn's chief media analyst brian stelter. good morning brian. so tell us how big of a win this is for president elect trump? >> yeah, $15 million and the attorneys fees. this is a big deal for a number of reasons. we know that the incoming president has been litigious over the years, actually over the decades. and almost all the times he's tried to sue a news outlet, he has been unsuccessful. this case, though, he has succeeded and it may have ripple effects as a result. it may embolden trump and his aides and his allies to file more of these suits in the future. as you mentioned, this is $15 million going toward a presidential foundation and museum. so literally it's abc helping pay for maybe a wing of the trump library someday. can you imagine the kind of trolling that trump might do, trying to name it for abc or something, because he says that they defamed him and then they had to pay him out. this settlement. it also comes with this apology note that's been attached to an article on the website. you know, in a case like this, a defamation ca

let's discuss with cnn chief media analyst brian stelter. n, we've really never seen anything like this before where elon musk is out there saying, kill this deal, and then it's killed. >> and i know that we often talk on television, on cable news about things being unprecedented sometimes. maybe we're not quite right. in this case, we are right. yes. yes, jim, this is unprecedented. this is the world's wealthiest man, a business tycoon. now at the arm, at the hand of donald trump. you know, we know, for example, last night at mar-a-lago, musk is sitting right there at the table with trump and jeff bezos. he really is the best buddy in chief. and that's why this deserves a lot of scrutiny. so much of what musk was posting on x yesterday about this spending bill was either misleading or outright false. he was referring to this bill being criminal. it's literally a legal piece of paper that he's calling criminal. there's a lot of misinformation that musk is spreading about this spending bill. i think that's a big part of the story here. >> yeah

cnn chief media analyst brian stelter is with us now to talk about this. what are you hearing from people inside of voice of america about this pick? brian? >> yeah. >> one employee said to me overnight, we're just hoping the guardrails will hold. another employee said, a lot of us are very disturbed by the idea of late coming in, mostly because of her media bashing over the years, as you just mentioned. you know, lake is a former local tv anchor and two time failed candidate in arizona known for her election denialism and her media bashing. she once likened journalists to monsters. the idea that she would be overseeing this u.s. government funded international broadcaster is certainly eyebrow raising, but it's exactly the kind of thing that trump has been doing in his picks. the difference with this pick, though, this announcement last night, is that presidents don't ordinarily have anything to do with choosing the voice of america director. this job has historically been an independent post. voa is very proud of having a firewall so that its news coverage

cnn's brian stelter joins me now brian, this i mean, this is pretty unusual and disturbing.hat do you make of all this and this ugly legal fight that is trying to be avoided by abc and disney, right? >> trump has a long history of filing lawsuits, including against news outlets. most of the time, those cases get thrown out. judges see right through those frivolous cases and throw them out. trump right now has litigation pending against cbs, for example, over a 60 minutes interview of kamala harris. so these cases oftentimes do not work out for trump. but this abc case is a major victory. i talked to renowned first amendment lawyer floyd abrams last night. he said, look, there's no way to say other than this is a big win for trump. it's going to embolden him to file more of these suits. but as abrams said, he called it disturbing that this could turn $15 million, could be paid off around the use of the word rape versus sexual abuse. in that interview on abc's this week. look, stephanopoulos has been a trump target for a long time. he was very aggressive in this interview that

joining me now to explore this is cnn chief media analyst brian stelter. ank you so much for being here, brian. i'm guessing that you concur with what mike allen said this morning well, i think we are all members of the media. >> so when elon musk says, hey, you're the media now, he's not saying something new or novel. he's saying something that's self-evidently true. we all have social media accounts. we all have phones. we're all members of the media. the concept of citizen journalism has been around for years, but i think what axios is pointing out that's really important is the distinction between reporting and talking. right. someone like elon musk is doing a lot of talking. and in the case of musk in particular, he seems to believe whatever scrolls past him on his phone. that's why he sometimes shares misinformation, including about this, this spending bill situation. so there's a lot of talking out there, a lot of noise, sometimes nonsense, a lot less reporting. i think it was valuable for axios to make that distinction. you know, if you ask me, what

cnn's chief media analyst brian stelter. joining me now. because this really gets to something quite interesting, brian, which is you can add this to the growing list of topics that elon musk is successfully inserting himself into. and and i mean, look no further than the government funding fight that we were just talking about with, with the panel before this. you know, he tanked that first bipartisan government funding bill that sent the hill into chaos last week, doing all of it, just coming from him, blowing up his twitter account. and all of this really coming from his whatever. he's however he wants to manage and how he is managing his platform. what role do you think x is going to play in the next administration? >> right. and musk is bringing his freewheeling attitude and spirit to basically every political story of the moment, reacting in real time. he's one of the only figures big enough, rich enough, famous enough to to share a stage with donald trump and and have that same kind of gravitational power. so that's what we're seeing

but as cnn's dana bash and brian stelter point out, many of musk's social media posts were far from accurate. >> i want to then move to a couple of examples, brian, of what you just said, some examples of what musk was posting this week as he tanked that bipartisan spending bill. first, he questioned how the bill can be called a continuing resolution if it includes a, he said, a 44 0% increase in pay for congress. that is not what the bill did. the pay raise, it did have a pay raise, but it would have been less than 4%, not 40 under 4%. he also posted that an nfl stadium here in washington should not be funded by your taxpayers. it wasn't funded by the taxpayers in that bill. it was specifically something about the way the land was dedicated. and so those are just two examples of things that probably are not going to be in what eventually passes. and it's probably not going to be in what eventually passes. and it's likely because of those two posts which don't have correct information. brian, he's oftentimes relying on random anonymous accounts. >> these websites, you know, these these users

we've just gotten this in from our brian stelter katelyn polantz and paula reid that he is escalating his legal campaign against media outlets and is suing. now that pollster j. ann selzer. so i want to ask you, shermichael, is this a scare tactic? you heard the question there about this isn't just legacy media that could be sort of threatened or sued, but anybody that makes a negative comment, is it a scare tactic to keep people from from doing, you know, negative reporting, if that's what is out there yeah. >> i don't know if it's a scare tactic, but i do know in our country, we permit everyone under our current laws to file a lawsuit if they have a potential claim against someone and that litigation will will move forward or it will fail on its merits, a judge will look at the allegations. a judge will assess whether or not it should move forward, and if it can't move forward, then the judge will dismiss it. if the judge does believe that there is potentially enough there to move forward, then it should move forward, as it would for me as a regular individual or the president of th
