where our brian todd has more information on an arrest that was made at an alleged bomb plot near the. capitol. brian, i understand you have more information on the identity of the suspect in this case. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right. we do have the name of the suspect. we're told by law enforcement official the suspect's name is amin khalifi, a 29-year-old moroccan living in alexandria, virginia. he was living in the u.s. illegal. he had various targets in mind for the alleged plot and finally settled on the capitol. he had previously considered, according to this official, a military installation, a synagogue and a restaurant where military and government people would be likely to gather. but he finally settled on the u.s. capitol building, according to a law enforcement official. this official says he came to the attention of law enforcement because of extremist views that he had espoused and that in december, he had started, quote, moving down the path towards conducting an attack. that's a quote from the law enforcement official. this official told us that at the

brian todd is on the phone. ted in washington on his way to the u.s. capitol with plans to attack it. can you give us more details on this developing story, brian, please? >> reporter: yes, we can. we're told that a suspect has, in fact, been arrested in connection with a terrorism investigation. this was an apparent attempt to attack the capitol, we're told, by law enforcement sort. this person tells us the person was arrested essentially on his way to the capitol. the arrest, according to the justice department, was the culmination of an undercover operation during which the suspect was closely monitored by law enforcement. now, what we're told by the justice department is that explosives, the suspect allegedly sought to use in connection with this plot, had been rendered inoperable by law enforcement and there was no threat to the public. according to one federal law enforcement official we spoke to, as soon as the suspect accepted what he thought was going to be a suicide bomb vest from an undercover officer,

our brian todd is live at the u.s. courthouse where the suspect just appeared in court. fascinating new details coming out in the court papers. fill us in. >> reporter: certainly, john. a very dramatic day where this alleged plot has unfolded in front of all of us. law enforcement officials say that they have had him in their watch for at least two months. he made an appearance before a judge. he's charged with the unlawfully attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction against property that is owned by the united states. the details, john, that you mentioned, according to court documents that during meetings with undercover officers, he allegedly desired to use and initially had his sights on attacking a rest are raunt in washington, d.c., possibly synagogues, possibly a military location and here's more interesting information from court documents from an affidavit. it alleges that last month when he settled on the capitol, he had modified his plans for an attack, that same day on january 15th of last month, at a quarry in west virginia, the proposed suicide bomb ope
