let's go to brian todd in charlottesville, virginia. udge on this second day of deliberations? >> they did, jim. just a short time ago, the jury was dismissed by judge norman moon. no verdict yet in this case. second full day of deliberations. now to that question you just mentioned, it was a key question. the jury posed to judge norman moon earlier today. they said, if we cannot come up with -- to a unanimous decision on counts one, two and three, do we have to be unanimous on counts four, five and six? those first three counts, jim, are very crucial. they are at the crux of the plaintiff's case. and that's the claim that these defendants, these white supremacists conspired to commit racially motivated violence in charlottesville in august of 2017. that question posed to the judge, very important. if we cannot come up with a unanimous decision on those first three counts do we have to be unanimous on the last three? judge norman moon told them that they have to continue to try to work to come up with a unanimous decision. if there is a

brian todd has a deeper look about what the rally has exposed about the tactics of white nationalistat drew others to charlottesville has drawn schisms among them. some prefer others to do the fighting for them. christopher cantwell, a neonazi, is representing himself in this lawsuit. on the stand, he was forced to listen to one of his own previous podcasts in which he said, quote, some of us got to be effing cannon fire for the race war. during the trial, the main organizer of the rally in charlottesville, was revealed in online chats planning the rally, encouraging other nationalists. quote, i want to talk s but as the event organizer, i can only do so much. people need to bully side them into confronting the alt right in charlottesville, he said according to a chat shown to the court. >> they officially either disavow violence or will themselves not get their hands dirty. they're espousing very violent ideas that can incite, motivate others to be violent, but they themselves stay away from it. >> and a new generation seems more polished, educated and aware of optics. richard spenc

brian todd is working the story for us. disturbing example of what's going on. >> it is, wolf. this video is as disturbing as it is bizarre. that post and another tweet have democratic leaders demanding these rogue leaders be brought under control. tonight, republican congressman paul gosar of arizona under fire for posting a photo shopped anime video depicting him attacking and killing democratic congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez. the video also depicts his character attacking president biden. she tweeted a response saying a creepy member of congress that quote, shared a fantasy video of him killing me. democratic house intelligence committee chairman adam schiff told the view, gosar has no business being in congress. >> he creates this video glorifying violence against one of our colleagues who's already been the subject of death threats and that's perfectly okay. >> gosar did not respond to cnn's request for comment, but he tweeted, it's a cartoon, relax. his own sister is horrified. >> does he have to act on it him

cnn's brian todd reports from charlottesville. >> reporter: christine and paula, this verdict constituteshing short of a devastating financial blow to some of america's most notorious white nationalists. now, while the jury was not able to reach a verdict on two key federal claims of conspiracy to commit racially motivated violence, they still found the defendants, the white supremacists, liable for four other claims and assessed more than $26 million in compensatory and punitive damages. now, for the rally organizers, they found them liable for conspiracy and for racial religious or ethnic harassment or violence, and those damages totaled about $12.5 million for the organizers. for james fields, the man who rammed his car into a crowd of protesters, killing heather heyer and injuring several others, they found him liable for inflicting emotional distress and for assault or battery, and the damage assessment against fields totaled about $13.5 million. here is what some of the attorneys connected to the case had to say after the verdict. >> i think this verdict today is a message that this

cnn's brian todd is on the scene. he's been following every step of this trial.izations being sued in this civil case? update our viewers. >> that's right, wolf. it is wide-ranging in the number of defendants. much as you mentioned, 14 individuals, 10 groups, all white supremacists. the question is did the defenda defendants, did they conspire to plan violence on that weekend of august 11 and 12 of 2017. as for the jurors, they broke for the day. they'll resume deliberations on monday. no verdict reached yet in this case. this was the first full day of deliberations. and the plaintiffs' attorneys presented a trove of evidence in this case that they say shows the defendants did plan this violence in advance. among the evidence were videos of the violence, but also secret communications that the plaintiffs' attorneys laid out with the defendants according to them talked about the possibility of violence, discussed bringing people who are known to be violent white supremacists to the rally and also were they engaged in private communications over an app called disco

cnn's brian todd has more on this case. >> reporter: laura and christine, thursday was an exhaustivearguments in this civil trial. lawyers for the plaintiffs, nine people who were injured during the unite the right rally in charlottesville in august of 2017, argued that the defendants white supremacists conspired to commit racial violence on that weekend. the plaintiffs' lawyers saying that these defendants used private communications to discuss the possibility of violence, and even to discuss whether it was legal to drive a vehicle into a crowd of protesters which is, of course, what we know did occur that weekend when james fields drove his car into a crowd of protesters, killing heather heyer. the defendants, these white supremacists, say that they did not plan this violence and that they never wanted violence. two of the defendants, white supremacists christoffer can't well and richard spencer defended themselves during this trial. now, during the trial some of the white supremacists even turned on themselves in court, confronted each other in court. and used the trial as a soap

brian: todd piro is live with this story which is continuing, which no one else is covering.nes. comes after the death of 8-year-old jackson sparks who died from his injuries in the attack. there is the picture did again. brooks is accused of plowing his car into last sunday's christmas parade injuring 08 people. brooks being held on $5 million bail in a wisconsin jail. if convicted, he face life in prison. meantime his attorney is asking to withdraw from the case claiming it's a conflict of interest. his motion reading in part, quote: relationships and familiarity between joe and the communities affected by incidents arising. the attorney withdrawing from two of brooks other cases. one from shooting at his nephew and another for driving his red ford suv over the mother of his child. brooks has a criminal record dating back to 1999 pleading guilty battery. he impregnated a 15-year-old girl. brooks still has active warrant there for bail jumping on another sex crime charge. we will find out what's next in this case after today's hearing in just a few hours. back to you. steve:
