>> it's a great question, brianna.i suggest is when we're talking about a noncombatant evacuation operation, in a contested environment under time constraints, we're normally going to see a bunch of phases. we have seen the first phase distinction and chaos. the second phase is the flow of people according to the plan even though it still has been somewhat up and down in terms of getting the right people into the airport. now we're going into a third phase based on the president's announcement yesterday where you have to take that of who you're going to put on the plane. it's going to be a made rush to the gates, if you will, for people who know that the end is coming. so we may see another rush as we saw the first couple of days of people trying to get out. but then you're going to go into the final phase, which is going to be the toughest one. that's where you have to determine as a commander on the scene who you keep behind in terms of your forces and the consulate officials from the embassy and who you put on plane

i'm john berman with brianna keilar. it is monday, august 23rd. this morning, a few minutes ago, white house officials confirmed the largest number so far of people evacuated from the airport in kabul in a 24-hour period. it's a really big number. 10,400 people. 10,400 air lifted out of kabul on sunday by u.s. military aircraft. now that again is a big number. it will have to continue to meet the clear need that is there. and it has been complicated by a whole slue of other developments. the airport, the scene of a deadly firefight overnight, involving u.s., german and afghan forces. afghan guard helping secure the base was killed by some kind of fire. unclear whether it was opponent fire or friendly fire. no americans were injured in that attack. after president biden said he is considering extending the afghan withdrawal deadline now, new this morning, a taliban spokesman tells cnn that all u.s. forces must leave afghanistan by the end of the month. they don't want to see any extension. >> that's raising questions about whether afghan allyies, p

i am brianna keilar with john berman.nning out for american citizens and for afghan allies who are desperate to leave afghanistan. the deadline to complete the withdrawal is august 31st. right now, though, the airlift is slowing down, effectively meaning that for many people that deadline has already come and gone, or the window is closing here. 13,000 people were taken out of afghanistan in the last 24 hours. that is far less than the nearly 20,000 we had seen during each of the two previous days. about 5,000 coming out with the u.s. military, also a dip from previous days here. u.s. efforts underway right now to help nearly 2,000 local embassy staff evacuate. and this morning there are american citizens trying to leave afghanistan, the thousands of green card holders, legal residents and allies. hope is really fading here. >> if hope is left for any of them. the embassy in afghanistan warned americans not to travel to the airport and for people alread
