i'm john berman with brianna keilar.s attacking a civilian nuclear power plant in ukraine. this is really the first time this has happened before ever in history. russian troops are now occupying the zaporizhzhia nuclear facility, the largest in europe, after shelling sets parts of it on fire overnight. the plant's operator says managers are running it at gunpoint. ukraine's president calls the attack terror at an unprecedented level. the u.s. embassy in ukraine wrote, it is a war crime to attack a nuclear power plant. the fire was extinguished after the russians stopped the shelling. the flames, they started in a training building, just outside the main reactor. we are told the radiation levels at the plant appear to be normal this morning. the head of the international atomic energy agency says the situation is very fragile, but there has not been a release of radioactive material and the integrity of the reactor has not been compromised

it is saturday, march 5th, i'm brianna keilar with john berman. welcome to a special edition of "new day." we're beginning with breaking news. ukrainian officials are telling people to stay in their homes in the area around mariupol. they're breaching two cities after agreeing to set up a humanitarian corridor so that ukrainians can leave. the ukrainians say the shelling and russian troop movements are ongoing. and western officials tell us that russia's strategy moving forward is to bombard cities into submission. the u.s. also says that russia is poised to send more than 1,000 mercenaries here in ukraine in the coming days and weeks. we also have new video from inside ukraine's largest nuclear power plant. so that is the plant in zaporizhzhia now under russian control. you can hear the announcement over the loud speaker pleading with troops to stop firing on the plant. authorities say the radiation levels appear to be normal despite that attack. but russian foshss are now closing in on ukraine's second nuclear plant. >> russian president volodym
