this evening is that of senator bernie sanders in concord, new hampshire, where we find our own brianna keilar. brianna, the mood there must be just jubilation. >> reporter: oh, definitely, jake. we heard them as soon as the projection came out. they were watching cnn. and people here just went crazy yelling "bernie, bernie, bernie," and actually all of this happening before a lot of people were even able to get into this event here at concord -- concord high school, i should say. but this is what all of these supporters of bernie sanders were expecting. and this has been fulfilled for them and now what they're really looking forward to is, of course, candidate coming out and giving his speech. we do understand that that is going to happen sooner than later. now with these projections out there. but this is something obviously so important for bernie sanders after his narrow loss in iowa. he certainly felt like his message about a rigged economy was resonating in new hampshire. that's what we really saw yesterday during his series of events. today he really took it easy, clearly confident he w

brianna keilar is live at hillary clinton's campaign headquarters. is the clinton campaign worried they'll face a repeat of 2008, strong and then a loss? >> they absolutely are, jake, but it's not actually based in any of the indicators that they're seeing. they're looking at the trajectory of the polls. they're looking at what they expect turnout to be. and they think that this is going in their favor. but at the same time so many people who were involved in her 2008 effort where she was delivered such a stinging third place defeat here in iowa remember that going into caucus night they felt good. they felt like they feel right now. but i did just bump into secretary clinton in des moines on my way to headquarters and she seems in very good spirits, so that's sort of something, an indicator of how she's feeling. certainly how the campaign is feeling. they feel good. they feel like they're going to be able to beat bernie sanders, but they're also anxiously awaiting the results tonight. >> brianna keilar, thank you so much. let's talk about sanders. j

we sat here, listened to brianna keil keilar, she told us about the speech.ou first, cnn is out with a new poll of south carolina voters today. overall hillary clinton has a pretty big lead. she's at 56%. sanders is at 38% among black voters. her lead is even stronger. she's ahead by 34 points. so can sanders -- listen, he can't make it all the way up, but can he narrow the gap? >> well, you know, when sanders first started this race in south carolina back in november, he was at 9%. folks say he didn't have a shot, he didn't have a chance to make a dent in south carolina. you see the numbers are really changing and they're changing because folks are beginning to find out who this bernie sanders guy is. they're beginning to find out that he really has the heart of the people and he's really moving and pushing that needle. now, let's make a point here now. bernie sanders does not need 60% of the african-american vote to win. and i think that's very, very crucial. does he need majority african-american vote? we want that, but does he need that? i don't think so.

john and christine. >> brianna keilar following the clinton campaign. talk about where things stand just a few hours before voters line up to caucus. i'm joined by white house correspondent colleen mccain nelson and with eric bradner. again, we are at the mars cafe in des moines. colleen, what is the turnout effort we heard about? what does it involve over the next few hours? >> hillary clinton is probably not going to be doing a lot of rallies in the next few hours. instead, she will probably stop by and talk to some campaign volunteers and get the troops fired up. there will be a very concerted effort to organize the volunteers. the good news for hillary clinton is that she had a months long head start on bernie sanders in this regard. she spent a long time building the huge operation. bernie sanders was not expected to do well overall and not expected to do this well in iowa. he was drawing big crowds, but not drawing the infrastructure. he had to play catch up and build an infrastructure in 99 iowa counties. >> you know, in these campaigns, they are

to brianna keilar at hillary clinton's campaign headquarters. what are you hearing there, brianna? >> reporter: yeah, the real story on that, wolf, is that the clinton campaign is banking on a minority of hispanic voters but a very sizable minority here in nevada. they're looking back to 2008 where they had 15% turnout, and they're hoping to hit that mark again, and their big play for this demo is so evident today in how you see hillary clinton spending some of her final moments, and how you see the campaign equipping some of these caucus sites. for instance, just this morning, hillary clinton on univision this morning, making a play for hispanic voters, and then we also understand that there are bilingual resink captains at a number of caucus sites. managing expect aces about what is going to happen here in nevada, you look at those data points and can see just how much they are banking on this key democrat graphic and hoping to hit that 15% turnout mark they had in 2008, wolf. >> brianna, quickly, once the results are in, we will hear from hillary clinton. right? she'll make some

brianna keilar is in milwaukee, wisconsin for us. the site of tonight's pbs democratic presidential debate, simulcast here on cnn. brianna, how important is this debate for both bernie sanders and hillary clinton? >> it's really going to be a crucial 95 minutes tonight, wolf. because you have this narrative in place now, coming out of bernie sanders' win in new hampshire. he's really riding high. we have seen him taking this victory lap in the last day, being very visible, going on "the view," going on "the late show," talking to reverend al sharpton. and you see hillary clinton kind of laying low in the last day, getting ready for tonight as she often does. and that just speaks to how crucial i think her campaign views tonight be. she wants to turn this narrative around so such a big defeat in new hampshire. and really i think what we're going to see, talking to sources is hillary clinton trying to draw contrasts between herself and between bernie sanders. that she's going to try to cast him as someone who is really walking away from

cnn's senior correspondent brianna keilar, joining me now live from houston. a great night for hillary. this was also a crucial win for her. >> yeah this is so important ama aamara. they said this is the best day of the campaign since hillary clinton declared hish candidacy back in april. and even without a win in nevada there was a clearer path to the nomination for hillary clinton then bernie sanders. so with this win in nevada which had sizable minority groups, african americans, and hispanics. but still, you know, these were not giant percentages of the overall democratic electorate. the fact that she was still able to clinch a win they feel so positive about. and then you saw her move almost immediately here to houston where she spoke at a historically black college last night. a very excited crowd, especially for one that had to wait four hours for her. this is where they feel like her strength is going into south carolina and other states to vote on march 1st. >> where does bernie sanders go here? appealing to non white voters and clearly clinton has th

our senior political correspondent brianna keilar has more.t are the expectations for bernie sanders and hillary clinton tonight? >> reporter: wolf, if you talk to people in the sanders camp and the clinton camp, they're all expecting that bernie sanders is going to pull out a win. you look at the polls and see why. our latest poll has him up almost 30 points over hillary clinton. so the question really, i think, for clinton is can she narrow that gap at all. a side from the outcome tonight which would be a huge upset if hillary clinton were to win, there's also this issue about what kind of democratic voters are going for bernie sanders versus hillary clinton. in iowa, we saw young people going for bernie sanders that included young women. and we started to see this split, this generational divide between younger democratic or democratic-leaning women and older democratic or democratic-leaning women. this has erupted very much here between iowa and new hampshire, especially with comments over the weekend from gloria steinem and madeleine albr

brianna keilar, cnn, des moines. >>> want to bring in our panel to weigh in. you know, who else stood out to me, guys, from clinton's speech, is she said, i'm a progressive who gets things done for people. universal health care. make college affordable for all. as if she was speaking to bernie sanders and not to all of us, ben. she knows what she has to do here. >> she knows she is in trouble. and whether people want to admit it or not, this is not a good night for hillary clinton, especially knowing what her mistakes were last time. she had done this before. and their campaign knew how to fix it and they couldn't fix it. we're sitting here at 2:00 in the morning and we don't know who won, bernie sanders won this. i thought it was interesting the way bernie sanders was talking when he addressed the crowd, compared to hillary. hillary was trying to get excited, get angry and frustrated. and bernie looked like he had a win tonight. and hillary clinton looked like she was pushed back. and that tells you a lot about the evening and how this is going to go forward.

senior correspondent brianna keilar is live at the site of the town hall event tonight.day? >> reporter: i'm here at the derry opera house where we are holding the town hall tonight. our crews are still working on the stage making sure that everything is in shape as it needs to be but this is the first time that we will have these two candidates in the same place together since iowans made their voices heard. and this is going to be -- for me, this is really probably the best forum that i've seen because i love how you have the voters asking questions of the candidates. we saw from our town hall that we did in iowa with these candidates that it's really unpredictable. you never know really where the voters are going to go. and they have some very tough questions for these candidates. we'll be seeing bernie sanders first and then we'll be seeing hillary clinton take the stage and there's so much at stake here. you talked about that deficit in the polls that hillary clinton is facing but she remembers back to 2008 when she had a moment right before new hampshire residents

brianna keilar is at hillary clinton headquarters.she won, right? >> reporter: yes, that's exactly right. really the campaign is indicating that they think it's because african-american voters held and they think this is so important going forward of it i want to tell you about something i heard that happened at the brooklyn headquarters for hillary clinton. this crowd here was cheering when they found out the projection. so was her staff which of course is a ton of people there in her brooklyn headquarters who have been toiling away and the loss in new hampshire was tough on them. so they have been working very hard with the hopes that they would pull out a win in nevada. but this is something that certainly is giving them a big wind in their sails. they are still looking forward. we can see that from the fact that hillary clinton, wolf after she speaks here at caesars palace she is going to head immediately to houston and she will be at a historically black college for an event. this is key to how she's looking toward south carolina

i want to go right to brianna keilar.he just heard the secretary of state deliver that powerful address with a few not so subtle references to donald trump. i didn't hear any subtle references to marco rubio or any of the other republican presidential candidates. i take it that was not by accident. >> reporter: that was not by accident. it was actually building, wolf, on something she said earlier today in alabama. and we are told by sources that she and her campaign believe donald trump is going to be the republican nominee. of course, as she mentioned, there's something to this idea that i think they would rather take on donald trump than marco rubio. so there's also that. but this speech, as far as all of the speeches go in her campaign since she launched it last april, this one i think, talking to sources, her campaign considers to be an inflection point for her. they feel this is a message that will really work for her. she started during her new hampshire concession speech. maybe people didn't pay a whole lot of att

cnn senior political correspondent brianna keilar live from houston. a very crucial win for hillary because it was important to blunt sanders momentum right? >> that's exactly right. he had won new hampshire and for this campaign, the clinton campaign from the time he had won new hampshire and nevada yesterday it was really tough going. it was top aides saying there was the best day of the clinton campaign since she declared her candidacy in april. there was a key win and partly because even though there is a sizable minority voting block in democratic electorate in nevada it is only 30%. 15% african american and 15% hispanic and with so many white voters there was a possibility that bernie sanders really could have closed the gap on hillary clinton. it seemed like one state more favorable to him that there was a thought especially with the caucus format it would favor. but ultimately he fell six points short of hillary clinton so it is this decisive win for her going into the south carolina which is friendlier terrain. >> so what about bernie sanders?

it was someone else. >> brianna keilar, thanks very much. clinton event, sanders side, a change in tone from the candidate. an issue or nonissue. senator sanders once said he was sick and tired of hearing about her damn emails, now he's saying something else. jeff zeleny has more of that in his closing drive. bernie sanders on the morning shows addressed the clinton email saga. what was he saying? >> well anderson he did say this is not an issue that voters care about right now. he said that iowa voters should not be burdened with this. he said it's a serious issue. those were carefully chosen words, anderson. he said it's a very serious issue. he said that's legal process under way that will have to play itself out. the translation of that is that you know look she's under investigation by the justice department. and this is not over. we've asked him and his advisers if there's any change in you know his tone from when he told you at that debate. enough of the damn emails. they say he's not going to bring it up on the campaign trail because

also jeff zeleny and political correspondent brianna keilar. angela, how successful?iously senator sanders started with a big deficit among african-american voters particularly in the south and elsewhere. how successful has he been at chopping away at that? >> from a messaging standpoint, very successful. he's weaved in mass incarceration, cruminal justice reform and economic disparities into his overall talking points and message. the problem i think so far with bernie sanders is that he's done very well from a messaging standpoint. he repeats himself often. the issue is, he's resonating with folks who are so anti-establishment, they haven't turned out yet to show their support for him. so if they are anti-establishment to the point they aren't voting, i don't think that's success. >> jeff, look at south carolina for a moment. hillary clinton well out in front of sanders there. how much of an impact could a win there for clinton have in terms of momentum going into super tuesday? >> i think it's very significant. just think where we were a week ago and a week and a h

i want to go to brianna keilar over at clinton headquarters. >> reporter: her campaign is relishing this moment, wolf. that is certainly no understatement. hillary clinton's communications director talking to reporters a short time ago and she said that they did better than they expected here in south carolina. she did noticeably strike a cautious tone. she said there's still a long way to go, there's still 46 states. she did say if african-american turnout for hillary clinton here in south carolina is indicative of what we will see in the southern states, they feel they're very well-positioned to pull ahead considerably from bernie sanders. now, privately, wolf, this is the more interesting part. sources with the campaign not so cautious. one of them, in fact, saying that they think that this race is going to be over mid march, march 15th. there's another series of contests on that day. that's just two weeks from wednesday. that tells you something. they have a lot of work to put in. but they think ultimately by mid march hillary clinton will have pulled far ahead of bernie sanders. alm

let's start coverage with brianna keilar. she is live in des moines with all of the news in the democratic race. brianna. >> reporter: i thought for sure that you guys would be exactly where the story is, but here i am where this is still not resolved. you said it, no definitive claim of victory on the part of the sanders campaign, but not so much for hillary clinton's campaign. her director says hillary clinton won the caucus. there is no uncertainly and secretary clinton won the most delegates. there is no outstanding information that could change the results and no way that senator sanders can overcome secretary clinton's advantage. there is still outstanding information in the precinct. the democratic party say the results are the closest in iowa democratic caucus history. hillary clinton has been awarded 699.57 state delegate equivalents. bernie sanders awarded 695.45 state delegate equivalents. des moines 42 is worth 2.28 state delegates. we will await that information there. looking at some of the entrance poll informat

brianna keilar is joining us from the sanders primary headquarters in concord.e sanders campaign been doing in this final push for voters in new hampshire? >> reporter: wolf, certainly bernie sanders has been taking it easy today compared to that whirlwind of a day that he had yesterday that culminated in a big concert at the university of new hampshire. today he woke up, he had breakfast with his kids, with his grandkids at perkins, which, as you know, is a chain restaurant but it's one that has become bernie sanders' go-to ever since he did all of his campaigning in iowa. and then he did visit that polling place, but afterwards. i should say he visited one polling place, compare that to hillary clinton's three, and then he took a walk just to relax. obviously to wind down before going back to his hotel ahead of the primary results coming in tonight. we're hearing from the campaign that they're pretty confident. they would be silly to not admit that, they are so far ahead in the polls. certainly are they admitting that they're going to clear hillary clinton by
