nbc 10's monique braxton is live in bridgeton, cumberland county. what is the family saying about what's next? >> hi. the family of jerome reed called us to this bridgeton house to denounce the decision. they plan to protest all while being critical of bridgeton's mayor. >> we sit here today in the wake of the no indictment for jerome reed, asking why. >> they're outraged and they plan to act. walter headson said the reids family will seek federal intervention. >> i feel justice was not served. my son does not have justice. >> jerome reid was shot to death here during a traffic stop last december. a dash cam captured the ensure exchange between the 36-year-old reid and two bridgeton police officers. last week a grand jury decided not to indict the officers, apparently believing testimony that they felt they were in imminent danger when reid jumped out of their car against their orders. we later learned that reid was not holding a gun when officers shot him. his hands were held high, but a gun was found in the glove compartment and we have also learn

it was there that two bridgeton police officers pull over jerome read at a routine traffic stop.oon then the situation escalates. one of the officers pulls his service weapon and tells read to put his hands up and to stay state. his partner recovers a weapon from read's car while this is happening but police are again still trying to keep him calm telling him to stay still and keeping his hands up. then police fire at least eight shots and those shots are shots that end up killing read during this incident. so, wednesday a cumberland county grand jury decided not to indict those two bridgeton police officers raheem days and roger worley were not indicted last week. this all leads to us today, again friends family activists questioning the cumberland county prosecutor's guidance in that case to the jury as well as the decision they say has left them heartbroken. >> we believe that they presented a weak case for there not to be an indictment. and as it played out in south jersey times, instead of seeking justice, the prosecutor acted more as a defense attorney for the two officers

nbc 10's tim furlong has been working this all day and joins us from bridgeton. tim? >> reporter: from the beginning, there has been a lot of conflicting stuff with this story beyond what actually happened in this small town. lots of people know each other, have interpersonal relationships, but that aside, a grand jury decided the officers should not face charges. from the police car dash cam, everybody saw what happened when two officers shot and killed 36-year-old jerome reed during a traffic stop. the shooting led to a number of protests in bridgeton and a demand for answers. >> i want to know why. why did he have to die? >> reporter: people wanted to know if the officers were justified in opening fire on reed. today we learned a grand jury decided the officers should not face criminal charges, saying at that moment the officers feared for their lives. the release says the officers knew reed had once been convicted of shooting at law enforcement. they had recovered a gun from the glove box of the jaguar in which he was a passenger. they say he forced his way out of
