justice brier. he was born in san francisco. he received an a.b. from stanford, a b.a. from maudlin college oxford and an mlb from harvard. he served as a law clerk to justice arthur goldberg of the supreme court of the united states during the october 1964 term. after justice brier pursued a career of teaching and public service president jimmy carter appointed him to the u.s. court of appeals for the first circuit in 1980. in 1994 president clinton nominated justice brier as an associate justice of the supreme court to succeed harry blackman. he took his seat august 3rd, 1994. since joining the court justice brier has completed no less than a number of books including "active liberty, interpreting our democratic constitution," making our democracy work, a judge's view, and then most recently "the court and the world, american law and the new global realities." with thanks and appreciation i would ask you to welcome justice steven brier. >> thank you. i'm glad you're all here. i was just talking to

supreme court justice steven brier introduces this event. it's just over an hour. >> let me now mention how much we appreciate the fact that justice brier has agreed to host this evening. we are sincerely grateful to you for that. brief comments about justice brier can't begin to do justice to him, so i'm going to have to be unjust in right of time constraints i'm subject to. justice brier has always been remarkably generous with his time in supporting society projects. and indeed in less than two weeks on june 6th at our annual meeting he'll be delivering the society's 41st annual lecture. and of course he's doing these extra projects for the society at a tremendously busy time for him and for all of his colleagues on the court, so justice brier, thank you so much. some background on justice brier. he was born in san francisco. he eventually after stanford came east, farther east. he's got a ba from magdalen college at oxford, went onto clerk for justice arthur goldberg, this court he served with great distinction in the justice department.

following huge protests and convicted of bribery embezzlement in the use of power our correspondent robert brier has more from the capital seoul. it's all dates back of course to park here in hays disgraced time in office you remember it became mired in this corruption scandal in 2016 as she was forced out of office early 2017 impeached and then prosecuted through the courts found guilty on a whole range of charges of bribery extortion abuse of power and in the original sentencing she was given a very hefty 32 years total for all of these offenses now last year the supreme court here in south korea sent this back to the high court saying it wasn't happy with the way sentencing are being carried out and there was an expectation that she could have faced actually more prison time in fact the prosecution was asking for it to be increased to 35 years well the opposite seems to have happened with the this court and now reducing the total time that she is been sentenced to for all the charges although her scent crimes in office 222 years also reducing the the fine she's meant to pay from $25000000.00
