this week, the second part of our look at an upcoming book by douglas brinkley. it's about dual roosevelt and the early days of the conservation movement. in last week's installment, mr. brinkley spoke about the genesis of this interest in the subject. >> what interests me is writing a book like this, roosevelt really is the father of the u.s. fish and wildlife. roosevelt realized the federal government had an obligation to take species of birds and animals, to save plants and trees, and to -- the president has an obligation to make sure that we put aside for generations unborn, natural wonders like roosevelt did, like the grand canyon or mount olympus or the petrified forest. they turned this training center for conservation into a museum almost four theodore roosevelt. >> the training center is the national conservation training center, one of many places douglas brinkley went to research his book. >> we talk about the eagle's nest and our discussion with doug brinkley about his book on conservation. it's over your shoulder. >> that was five years ago we had a

so it's cassidy brinkley, johnny brinkley, benton brinkley. my wife is ann goldman of new orleans. we met there and got married in new orleans and have become a family man. it's changed my life. and more, brian, changing your life having kids, i love taking them -- all my kids want to do now is go to the wild basin to go see animals. we have a place in austin. so i take them to a nature study center. i'm teaching them the animals. they don't look and say they know even -- if they see a fish in the tank, that's a perch. i trained them to get them to start knowing all of them and they each have favorite animals that they've honed in on. my daughter benton, for example, is all ducks and we have -- without exaggeration she probably has 200 ducks, toy ducks -- >> 200 toy ducks? >> she just surrounded her of all of these little, it's an obsession. but the audubon society of america does a whole series of bird stuffed toys, which are really fun because you can get a great blue heron or you could get a snowy egret or whatever it might be. we have a lot of those, too, a big audubon society

s back to doug brinkley, when did you start writing the first chapter? i started writing my proloug and how we started saving. >> i have been collecting my files i had people take me to watch sea turtles. at night with the great turtle expedition it will get like the birth of mankind. it was like biblical. i was trying to experience some of the wild life there wouldn't be manete in florida today if it wasn't for roosevelt. gerald ford is a very small book. this book was the book i was going to live and die by. i was putting everything i had as for my childhood experience at national parks to my knowledge of theodore roosevelt. many women have written great books recently on t.r. kathleen dalton. there's great literature out there. i've been going to t.r. conferences really since the 1980s. my hobby was less t.r. than the sites that he saved. when happened with the reagan diaries is i wasn't expecting it. about our rangers and d. day. peat wilson, the former governor of california. there was a stiplation. one with mrs. reagan that ended it up quickly. i h

you just talked to douglas brinkley. easily theodore roosevelt is our starting point for the american conservation movement. rachel carson plays the same role with what we call the american environmental movement. which has different concerns than roosevelt had. a little more wholistic concerns. beginning concerns about toxins and pollutants. getting concerns about endangered species, even things that might have been pests or predators. she's a touch point beginning in 1962 with silent spring for the environmental movement. that's where that begins. really 1901 with theodore roosevelt's presidency is where the conservation movement begins. >> you told me earlier that you have a son named theodore. any relationship to theodore roosevelt? >> yeah. it's no coincidence. my 4-year-old's name is theodore. and he's named partially in honor of theodore roosevelt, because theodore roosevelt has so many admirablalties. he loved nature. i hope my theodore loves nature. he had exuberant energy. definitely my 4-year-old exhibits that

. >> that training center is the national conservation center, one of the many places douglas brinkley went to research his book. >> we talked about the eagles nest and our discussion was douglas brinkley, about his book on conservation. it's right over your shoulder there. when did that start? >> about five years ago, we had a pair of bald eagles that come in trying to build a nest. first surgeon general they didn't do a very good job. the second season, they came back, tried again. they succeeded in building that nest. they had two eeg lets that year. one died and the other pledged out. >> what does that have to do with the business here? >> until five years ago, the american bald eagle was and dangered species. because of many conservation groups, it was actually taken off the endangered species list about a year ago. so it's a good -- i think it's a good model for us to aspire to where critters that were almost gone off the face of the earth have come back. >> why do you do this job here as a historian? >> well, i'm an environmentalist historian, so the dream for me was to work in

. >> the first of two hours with douglas brinkley on wilderness warrior. sunday night at 8 or listen at xmsatellite radio or download c- span podcast. >> we are talking about health care reform. can you get us up to speed on the status? >> the senate finance committee has been wrestling with how health-care reform, and the public plan option. they are looking at a variety of things. yesterday, there were documents that circulated, looking at a sample as -- of eight medicaid expansion. -- of a medicaid expansion. perhaps some tax credit that will help people for their coverage. they are looking at what the cost of the bill is. they want to get it under a trillion dollars. also in the senate, the health committee has started their mark up of their bill. it is very contentious. it has republicans offering tons of amendments to the bill. chris dodd has been handling things. he is trying to get consensus on that panel, but that could go till the end of the week. in the house, republicans have come up with that the outline of a product that would look at private
