joining me now is douglas brinkley back with me actually. joining me now olivia, washington correspondent for new york magazine. olivia you get the first word. do you think the president has been fundamentally changed by this president? >> well i think that donald trump has revealed issues that already existed in the press. he's also prompted a lot of self-reflecting and debate amongst the press about how best to cover him. things maybe we didn't talk about before or we didn't analyze too closely before. i think that can be a good thing. i think it can be a bit of a distraction. but i don't really know that the president has changed the media. he's not changing the way that people are reporting. every is doing their jobs the same way. they're investigating the same way. i think he has made everyone's attention span shorter. there's that saying about trump i think others have said. he makes everybody a little bit like him. i think that's true to some extent about the press core as well. we all have that short attention span the way he does be

it was at the country place assisted living on olive lane >> leslie brinkley is live with the story. >> reporter: dan and kristen, you can imagine the panic of getting 49 alzheimer's patients evacuated from the building behind me and then bussed away to another assisted living facility about a mile away from here in antioch. the red cross is bringing in cots to help the displaced seniors. that fire started around 2:00 in a laundry room here at country place and it triggered a sprinkler head that flooded the rooms in the common areas. residents were hoping to go back in and recover their belongings but they were evacuated. no one was injured and authorities called a mass casualty event because they needed to find immediate housing for 49 alzheimer's patients. a facility called stepped up and these residents are likely to be displaced for a while. a cleanup crew i spoke to here said that there was a fire in a neighboring building just a year ago also that appeared to start in a laundry room. but these 49 residents are safe and sound for now. reporting live in antioch, i'm leslie brinkl

abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley is live at the scene with the latest. leslie? >> reporter: that's right, kristen, that bus driver is 34 weeks pregnant, she got out of this accident, complained of pain, of course, she was rushed to a hospital. san pablo dam road is not open yet. we thought it would be. we're expecting it to re-open at any moment. let's take a look, though, at this very serious accident. in the video, you can see there was a white pickup truck and vw that were northbound, another white pickup and a school bus that were heading southbound. the school bus was going to ellerhorst elementary. somehow they collided on san pablo dam road. that's been investigated. it happened at 8:10 this morning. chp says it was misting rain. now, the vw driver suffered serious internal injuries according to chp. another adult had a broken leg. the school bus driver as we mentioned who's 34 weeks pregnant, all of them were taken to john muir medical center in walnut creek. now, there were seven kids on the bus, only one complained of pain. but out of an abundance of c

joining me now presidential historian douglas brinkley and national correspondent for "the atlantic."entlemen, good evening to you. thanks for joining us here on saturday evening with the government shutdown. let's talk, james. jeff sessions announced that daca would be rescinded. he didn't have to do that, but he's a hardliner on immigration. is this shutdown a self-inflicted wound, do you think? >> i think the internal dynamics of the party have been the main driver here. if i could just say, what's striking to me, i was actually thinking about other presidents at this stage of their presidency. douglas brinkley is the historian, but in my role as amateur journalist, it is remarkable if you go back to the last six or eight presidents, uh have the list, by the time they were one year in, almost everything that was important or going to accomplish had already been done. if you apply that kind of marker to donald trump, it's not simply that no other president has a shutdown in his first year, approval ratings below 50%, nobody had protests, but all the others had essentially gone towar
