today's court hearing was in modesto where we find "abc 7 news" reporter leslie brinkley. day there. >> reporter: he was arrested as gustavo perez arriaga. that was one of many aliases the accused cop killer used when he was in the country illegally according to immigration officials, but in court it was the murder suspect's real name, paolo mendoza and his real birth date, december 28, 1986. he shuffled into the room in shackles, his eyes downcast, never looking up at family members in the front row. he waived his arraignment through an interpreter and court-appoint he attorney. the judge 'signed a value to evaluate him for competence to stand trial. he remains in custody, no bail. in court were 11 fellow officers from newman, nearly the entire police department, as well as corporal singh's family. he is accused of shooting and killing

pg&e has officially filed for brinkley. pg&e facing millions of dollars in potential liability for the california wildfires. sara zendehnam is joining us live at the headquarters in san francisco. you have a lot more on this. morning. >> reporter: pg&e says their priority is safety and filing for bankruptcy will not affect services for customers. critics say this is the utility easy way out. earlier pg&e cited hundreds of lawsuits from wildfire victims , and billions of dollars in potential damages. the cause of the camp fire has not been announced and state investigators determined pg&e was not to blame for the north bay fires. utility filed for bankruptcy. the bankruptcy stopped lawsuits and consolidated and makeups it courts. according to legal experts, that could mean less money for victims. attorney general called the filing and on welcomed development. the california public utilities commission held an emergency meeting on monday for the utilities request. the cpuc will allow pg&e to borrow up to $10 million. proteste

today's court hearing was in modesto where we find "abc 7 news" reporter leslie brinkley. she spent the day there. >> reporter: he was arrested as gustavo perez arriaga. that was one of many aliases the accused cop killer used when he was in the country illegally according to immigration officials, but in court it was the murder suspect's real name, paolo mendoza and his real birth date, december 28, 1986. he shuffled into the room in shackles, his eyes downcast, never looking up at family members in the front row. he waived his arraignment through an interpreter and court-appoint he attorney. the judge 'signed a value to evaluate him for competence to stand trial. he remains in custody, no bail. in court were 11 fellow officers from newman, nearly the entire police department, as well as corporal singh's family. he is accused of shooting and killing corporal singh during a suspected dui traffic stop on december 26th in newman. surveillance video from a nearby convenience store led to his arrest 55 hours later in bakersfield. seven other accused accomplices including his g

i want to go back to the quotation from alan brinkley's, brilliant historian. i'm loath to disagree slightly, but i want to push on the idea that regresses, we can build a formulation of progressives were good on this, that on that. the challenge for analysts and historians is to try to figure out why, and step back from these are the accomplishments and these early failures. rather, think about how these go together. brandeis, for example, wilson does this remarkable thing, fights for the people's attorney. who had done work for women, who had done for working-class people, unions, and yes, he's a jew. that's supposed to be really brave, and it is. on the other hand, brandeis is a kentuckian, and there's a meeting of the minds that he is not a threatening presence to wilson. wherever he worships, wilson couldn't feel comfortable in front of brandeis. that's a way of getting into this question. what is the good and the bad come from? where are wilson's comfort points? another way to do this is to think about how accomplishments can be failures. if we look at a
