we are so happy to be joined by douglas brinkley, author of the new book "mesh moonshot," john f. debut at number ten on the "new york times" best seller list. doug, my friend, it's great to see you. sick of watching you on that other network, very happy for you. i have read and finished the book. let's start with how crazy it sounds today that this thing, i said basketball, somewhere between basketball and beach ball showed up in the skies over this country. it scared a lot of people in this country including my late parents, and it scared president john f. kennedy. >> absolutely. i mean, dwight eisenhower was president, and he kind of tried to just say it wasn't that big of deal. some people were calling it a grapefruit satellite, but lo and behold with the headline you just showed on the "new york times," a panic kind of swept the land. this was the era of mccarthyism red scare and the idea that the soviets had a nuclear weapon they detonated in 1949 and had hydrogen weapons and now are beating us into space with satellites and jack kennedy seized on this. he started saying tha

doug brinkley, we interrupted you, but go ahead. you were making an important point. >> well, i was just trying to make that caomparison, differences between what happened to bill clinton and what's happening to donald trump here. bernie sanders immediately took the microphone right now, and that's a big difference. we are running a 2020 presidential campaign, and bill clinton was at the end of his second term, and it affected politics in the sense that bill clinton got -- once he wore the eye, al gore tried to avoid being seen with bill clinton a lot. most scholars feel that was a mistake, that gore should have wrapped his arms around the clinton economy. impeachment during clinton it stigmatized the president. we'll have to see whether donald trump gets stigmatized to what happens here. whether in the summer people are going to look at donald trump or in the fall as an impeached president running for re-election, or are they going to say this is just a lot of politics as usual. and my final point would be that i never thought i'd

doug brinkley doug brinkley, your thoughts tonight? >> i'm disappointed in lamar alexander. he was one of those senators to be a kind of special cut that you never -- an independent spirit. he's from tennessee. and remember during the watergate days he had fred thompson turn in many ways on nixon. particularly howard baker. that was the republican party back then. it's not the republican party now. what lamar alexander has done, i think, is hurt his legacy in history, seeming more as a partisan player right now than somebody that was thinking about what's best for the liberty of the country. >> tim, are there any guardrails now on the presidency? >> in one way n part, tonight is the end of the period that started in watergate when there was a bipartisan acceptance of the concept of abuse of power. lamar alexander talked about how this was a partisan impeachment. what he didn't add was the reason it was a partisan impeachment was that the trump party is no longer willing to accept certain assumptions about the limits on presidential power. and so what we're seeing tonight is
