judge brinkley would keep meek on a short leash. requiring him to follow the courts rules. tests, travel restrictions, and he had to submit his travel schedule for court approval. any misstep, called a technical violation, would send him to prison. so, why exactly is a technical violation of one's probation? >> a technical violation can be anything. it could be being late for a curfew. it can be being out of the jurisdiction. it can be something as minor as not being on time for a probation meeting. in november, 2012, she banned meek from 24 month. after he was arrested for suspected marijuana use. but never charged. in 2014, she sent meek to jail for 3 to 6 months. for traveling without permission and testing positive for opioids. an added more years to his probation. and two years later, she slapped him with house arrest, without permission to work for 90 days. again, for travel violations and giving a fake you're in simple. and again, added more years to his probation. a lot of law-abiding people here would look at this story and say, technical are they're a lot not, the

let's bring in presidential historian douglas brinkley.ooking for, how that meeting goes. what approach do you think he should take? >> it's a big meeting. u.s. and russian relations are at a low ebb. it's at rock bottom of the barrel. donald trump in 2008 had met with putin in helsinki and gave him a hug and a kiss practically. biden's going to have to hold a very tough line with putin. we have issues with russia over the ukraine, over antarctica, over interference with american elections, and with cyber space. the list is long. but the most important thing biden and putin could do is to de-escalate the tensions, just if they could leave geneva and the world feels that things have gone down a notch and the disdain that each country currently has for each other, that would be a success for biden. you don't want a repeat of jack kennedy on june of 1961 where putin starts, you know, hammering away at biden and biden starts slamming back, and it actually escalates tensions instead of deescalates them. >> so you have that meeting that we're al

i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. today.ood morning, america had an exclusive look at a de escalation simulator being used by the oakland police department. it has officers deal with various scenarios, and it comes up with different outcomes based on the officers, reactions. in oakland, the focus is to use it to mend frayed relations within the community. how can both people leave that interaction safely? how can we both lived through this experience and make sure that nobody gets hurt? it actually made me open my eyes more because i was somebody that villainized officers. so now it's my duty to also explain that to others that don't understand what law enforcement is about. oakland's police chief says his top priority is rebuilding trust with the community and deescalating, potentially fatal encounters. san jose, meanwhile, has been trying to curb gun violence for weeks. the city council recently passed a law requiring retailers to videotape all gun purchases. the idea is to discourage straw purchasing. that's when someone

joining me is presidential historian douglas brinkley for more on this. america is back. what does that mean, though, for these historical alliances, that message? >> well, it is the slogan that joe biden's going to be remembered for, and this is a very important trip to reintroduce himself to the world. and you know, so far it's been an amazing journey for joe biden. when he landed in the united kingdom, he wassen braced with open arms -- was embraced with open arms. he spoke to american troops. he had a great session with the queen. boris johnson and joe biden have seemed to bond somewhat, although it may not go down in history like roosevelt and churchill or reagan and thatcher. it went well considering that boris johnson was one of the leading architects of brexit, and that wasn't u.s. policy. and then at the european union countries seemed to just want to be with biden every minute, embraced him as one of their own. the nato discussions are going along perfectly. so biden's got a strong trip going on right now. so it does not want to get trip wired b

the invasion of normandy occurred 77 years ago yesterday historian douglas brinkley wrote that d-dayas the single most important moment in the 20th century and one of the most tragic, too, in terms of loss of life. i think he was right. 160,000 soldiers crossedded the channel that day to begin the campaign to recapture europe from hitler's rule. on their backs were rubbing sacks with 8 -- were ruck sacks with 80 pounds of gear. so too were the fate of all of us, our allies of europe and the free world. many of our best and fright americans did fall that -- brightest americans did fall that day. we lost more than 10,000 men in one day. the nazis spent two years fortifying the wall. the beautiful wall was covered in land mines and bunkers. at the end of the largest amphibious invasion in history we stood victorious, battered but not broken. on we marched through france, through belgium and finally into germany itself. but even today amid the flowers and fields of normandy, i've been there. many of you have been there, listening tonight, you can feel even today the lingering presence of
