if you're a nascar fan, you probably know bristol speedway but not quite like this.square foot warehouse that they're using to collect supplies. these boxes are waiting to be filled. you can see from the names on them, with basic necessities on the other side. i'm seeing batteries, flashlights, first-aid. this one says canned goods. there is a massive wefrt both federal agencies as well as local volunteers trying to get those supplies where it needs to go. of course, water and we have here, of course, gatorade, it's hot out here in different parts of the south. a massive effort to not only get supplies where it needs to be. we talked about the difficulty getting to those remote areas using horses. using mules to get supplies up shattered roads that lead to isolated mountain towns. we've heard of people donating their time and their own private helicopter or their own private air may not to do exactly that. what i thought was so interesting, it is information that people are trying to get to the people who need it. they've gotten creative doing exactly that. we know t

so this is bristol speedways, one of their warehouses.t's 80,000 square feet, and it is waiting to be filled with supplies, donations. it just opened this morning. they are still waiting for them to be filled, but we are already starting to see them get filled little by little, and they are asking for people to donate. we're talking about top needs here, diapers, wipes, first aid, batteries, flashlights. so this is just a small portion of what we're seeing. of course, we have seen churches doing the same, small, local community donation drives, but, ana, as some people are in the process of cleaning up, digging out their homes and starting the rebuilding phase, of course we're talking about people trying to give aid to others, this is still a dire situation for so many. sam brock illustrated that in north carolina. we have seen similar situations here in tennessee. there are still family members waiting to find their missing loved ones, impact plastics a local factory. there has been a lot of tension with spanish speaking families. they h

officials i spoke to told me that people making donations should focus on taking those to the bristol speedway this entire area. when it comes to the power, we can see the work being done just behind us. all of these utility poles have been put in. the workers are out there and doing what they can as the cleanup continues. of course, restoring all of the services continues to be a priority. >> guad vanegas, thank you. let us bring in it science reporter denise chow, who has been covering the storm. how much did climate change factor into the severity of the storm? >> reporter: tying climate change directly to certain weather events is tricky. we know that overall climate change is making extreme weather much more intent. we know that global warming is increasing ocean temperatures. that helps big storms form and develop and strengthen kind of like what we saw with helene. we know the warmer atmosphere holds more moisture which means it can dump a lot more rainfall over land. that is exactly what we saw play out. >> one of your argument helene was expected to be a florida storm. weather is unpr

>> reporter: jose, we're in bristol motor speedway. the scale of the damage is being matched in the scale of this massive release effort here. this is a portion of the race way campus taken over by the northeast tennessee disaster relief center. i'll step out of the way. you get a sense of some of the goods pouring into this area right now. they're sorted by product. we have all the necessities in the far background, you see pallet upon pallet of water and then paper goods, food, anything people will need in the next few days. off to my left, what you can't see is that all of these goods are being split up by county. this relief center services a nine-county area of tennessee. some of those spots incredibly rural. we had a chance to join the national guard yesterday, jose, on board one of the blackhawks and they were reaching areas that were cut off because roads and bridges had been washed away. we landed in the community of elk mills, tennessee, one of the first reporters to see the extensive damage there, jose. and we spoke to one w

. >>> mean while, a massive release effort is under way at the bristol motor speedway in tennessee.find nbc news international correspondent marissa parra who joins us live. >> reporter: this is a critical emergency for so many. so many families are lacking the access to basic necessities like running water. you mentioned those who remain missing. we have seen those families firsthand. the desperation, it's been almost one week since their family members wen went missing. of course, we're seeing the desperation growing and the hope starting to fade. at this point, we're seeing so much response all across the country. we're seeing federal response, federal agencies on the ground. big setups at disaster release centers like the ones behind me. of course, the smaller efforts like the churches doing dnation drives. all the efforts to get to the remote places, the rescues happening. we've seen countless stories of exactly that. we've seen horses, mules, used to trudge up the sides of mountains after roads were shattered, cutting off access. helicopter rescues on top of barns. we've seen
