brittany hopper has the story. >> reporter: south bay beaches were supposed to be closed indefinitely. but friday night, the coast guard and county health officials say they are back open. tourists and businesses are by happy to hear the beaches are back open. they were worried about business since a lot of their sales have to do with surf and swim rentals. >> we are so happy. i was going to be such a burden on all the local businesses here. >> reporter: the tar balls were spotted wednesday and for days the crews have been on the beaches in hazmat gear cleaning up. three dump trucks were filled with the tar balls. the big mystery remains though. where did the tar come from? the coast guard is testing to see if it is naturally occurring or possibly from one of the tankers offshore. and they haven't ruled out a link to the santa barbara oil spill. >> we are super stoked now. >> reporter: though the beaches are back open, the coast guard and life guards will continue to look for tar all weekend. >> as for the spill in santa barbara, the cleanup is still going on. >>> well south bay recyc
