my name is britly salter, and -- brittany salter, and i'm a 3-l. i chose an intern for the department of police accountability because i want to be a part of building a better relationship between minorities and women of color. i have witnessed how minorities are treated by those who have the authority to enforce laws. while working with the d.p.a., i have been able to see all of the hard work director henderson and his staff do to improve these interactions, particularly with the mediation program. i've also developed a new found appreciation for the work that the officers do, and realize we have many of the same goals, which is to ensure safety for the entire community. i worked with the investigations unit. i reviewed body worn camera footage which gave me firsthand knowledge of how police incidents unfold in the real world. i did legal research and prepared memos on legal issues such as felony stops, searching a person of the opposite sex, and use of force. i also helped create a presentation on the use of force by police officers which directo

joining me is brittany connolly. she helped put on the rally.icult it would be, how long the trauma would linger. where have we come as a nation in a year? >> i believe we're making strides. more people are coming along in the work of anti-racism. we have a long way to go. here in charlottesville, the white supremacy didn't arrive last october and it isn't gone now. we will continue to do the work. >> you have talked about being so much more than -- you say charlottesville is not just a hash tag. it's work that goes on every single day. can you talk about the progress that you believe has been made in the last year? >> sure. we certainly are having more people come along with efforts, for example, to have more affordable housing, to do court support for the black and brown people who are consistently targeted by police, to have court support for those who were targeted last year on august 12. three black men for simply protecting their own selves and their bodies. it's movements that people are coming along with, but we need more people with us.
