court this afternoon brittany norwood's attorney admitted his client killed jayna murray last march but only offered she just lost it during an argument. montgomery county state's attorney john mccarthy told the jury the lululemon manager was beat and stabbed to death in a savage attack after norwood lured murray back to the store after hours. joining us to talk about the trial is former prince george's county prosecutor and state's attorney glenn ivey. glenn, thanks for joining us this evening. >> thanks for having me. >> let's talk about this defense admission, an opening statement that question, brittany norwood killed jayna murray. what are we to make of that? >> apparently the defense decided that the evidence was not to try and challenge the fact that the defendant committed the murder but instead to attack the issue of premeditation. the logic there is if they went on that point, you would end up with a second degree murder conviction which would have a maximum of a 30-year jail sentence as opposed to a potential life sentence for a first degree murder conviction. >> clearly the

but the most important thing that happened today was the playing of brittany norwood's first interview with police. for the first time, they heard her voice as the state played audio of her first statement to police. in court norwood bowed her head and closer eyes as her voice told the tale of an attack by two masked men on her and her co-worker. she described how a man repeatedly hit her and there was so much blood. she claimed he -- and she claimed she was brutally sexually assaulted but the nurse to examine norwood testified there was no evidence of such an assault. her defense attorney admitted this story was an inept attempted cover-up. last month, brittany norwood did kill jayna murray at the bethesda store where they worked. they claim that happened in a fight and it is not first-degree murder. prosecutors are carefully presenting all of the technical evidence to the jury to proof norwood did plan the killing and cover-up. grisly evidence a technician explained how tools from the lululemon store including a hammer, a boxcar knives and a long kitchen knives were likely the weapon
