nbc area's sam brock joins was the details. >> reporter: good afternoon. this is a very popular place for people to come hiking or horse back riding. you see the stables over my shoulder. today was the backdrop for a tragedy. here is what we know. here at thornton state beach there was a man, a 67-year-old man, according to the national park service, who was out walking with his dog. at some point along the way, this is an off-leash area, that dog got away from the man and got onto a cliff. we'll show you, i'm not quite sure what portion of the video you're seeing, but there is a steep ravine. beyond the ra veechb is where the cliff is that leads you to the ocean. that's where the man lost control of his dog and went to try to save him. according to the national park service, he fell about 500 feet at that point when he tried to save the dog and landed on the beach. eventually a chp helicopter came in. they were assisting the recovery here with north county fire protection district. they located man, brought him back on the helicopter. he was transported t
