their van landed in a remote part of the bronx zoo. news4 has more from the newsroom on the horrific crash. >> reporter: good morning to you. at this point investigators are trying to determine how and why this happened. now right now they say they are not sure what exactly caused the driver to lose control. that suv was of course carrying a family of seven, as you mentioned, two grandparents, their two daughters, and three granddaughter. officials say the honda was heading south in the far left lane of the bronx parkway sunday when the driver hit the median, skidded across several lanes of traffic, and plunged over a guardrail. that suv fell 59 feet, landing on its roof in a remote section of the bronx zoo. as for the victims, police say the grandparents were in their 80s. the children were 10, 7, and 3. everyone was wearing a seat belt. >> the injuries were horrific. in 30 years, i've seen something like this one or twice. everybody was taken aback by it because everyone has a relative, everybody knows a child, everybody has a grandp

anna kooiman is live outside the bronx zoo now, anna? >> well, harris, we haven't learned the names of any of the seven people killed today, but we can tell you that the children were all girls, ages three, five and ten, the driver of a female 45-year-old another 39-year-old female inside the vehicle, as well as two elderly people, one male and one female. now, the n.y.p.d., they pulled the vehicle from the scene just about an hour ago, using a flatbed truck. the accident happened about 12:30 this afternoon when the driver of the light colored honda pilot lost control, hit the median, crossed four lanes of traffic and then went airborne, plunging 55 feet over the overpass onto the bronx river parkway and into a ravine, landing on its hood in a wooded area, next to a train yard where the zoo stores the mon rails. when our crew arrived did marks could be seen on the highway and jaws of life. visitors and zoos were unaffected by the happening today. >> harris: the toll a very, very heavy one, you mentioned 55 feet, that's about five stories

an suv flies off the road in new york city and lands 60 feet below into the bronx zoo. seven people are dead, and as our susan candiotti reports, three of them were children. susan. >> reporter: it was a beautiful sunday afternoon and then something went terribly wrong. police say they are still investigating what caused a woman driving an suv to suddenly lose control of that vehicle and go sailing over an overpass and down about 60 feet. here's what police have pieced together so far. a woman driving the suv, 45 years old along, with another woman, an elderly couple and three children inside ages 5, 15 and 3 all of them wearing seat belts driving down the highway. for some reason, according to eyewitnesses, the woman lost control of that suv, hit a concrete barrier in the middle of the highway, made a hard right turn apparently losing control, crossing three lanes of traffic going in the same direction. she hit a curb and then another barrier, a fence and went sailing over the overpass going out about 60 feet and then about 60 feet down. the suv flipped over and crushe

this is the bronx river park way, right? >> yes. >> is it a straight away, is there a curve, is there something maybe unusual about that particular spot that would cause someone to lose control? >> reporter: i'll tell you, in that section of highway, it goes from being elevated to back down at the street level. and in that elevated section, it's an old section of the highway, there's a part of it that has, as you can see in that picture there, there's no shoulder on that side of the elevated part of the highway. i believe that was the accident i was at in 2006, yes, it was. you can see in that area there was no shoulder and as a result it was an area that people tended to speed in because they knew there was no place for a police car to be sitting to catch speeders and there was talk that speed may have played a role in that accident back in 2006 and that's where speed was a factor here. but you can see in that shot that we just saw, that the center median back then was much, much lower than it is today and it was the reason
