the bronx river parkway. like the parkways of the emerald necklace in boston, which were initially created as a sanitary improvement, the bronx river parkway was an effort to conserve the polluted bronx river in westchester county, new york. and this is a sort of scene, a nice sylvan landscape scene. but much of the bronx river parkway initially looked like this. if we look closely here, we got people's laundry back here, and right there, that images and outhouse. right? so if you think about pollution, we actually have sanitary waste pretty much probably flowing down in to the bronx river down here. so in 1907, the bronx river parkway commission, sort of like a park commission but a parkway commission, an independent agency of the city, was authorized to survey, acquire, design and construct a 16-mile linear parkway along the river. like the muddy river in boston, it was going to be a -- let's clean up the river project. pollution control, sanitary, sewers, roads, park, all combined into one, and the propert

here is the bronx river parkway. so we can see to accommodate cars moving and 20 to 30 piles an hour, the blood curves connected to broad spiral curves, right. it creates a line through the landscape. hat's change number one. number two, we get a wider and wider right-of-way. this is a landscape development plan for the roadway. we can start to see two things about the right-of-way. first of all, it's not consistent. it's not just a consistent narrow strip running through but it opens up to provide park experiences. and the road bed gets wider and wider. it gets up to the 400 feet width talked about in an article. in addition, number three, i like this sort of image because here we can see the local roads, one of the local roads owner it and you'll see there is no access on to the main parkway. to accommodate faster moving traffic, we eliminate that access point, why, small children will run out in front of the cars and get crushed. specific points are designed where you can get on the roadway and in fact to do this

and all of that produced in the south bronx. >> that's right. as we would say in the south bronx, all that and a bag of chips. >> hinojosa: so a lot of people, when they think of the south bronx, 1960s, '70s, when you were growing up... >> right, right, right. >> hinojosa: ...their image is of a place that was entirely desolate, that was, you know, in destruction. >> right, right. >> hinojosa: but for you, it was a totally different reality. >> well, there was that element to it. but i always say that i was very fortunate to have grown up in that time period, because the culture, as far as latino and african american culture, particularly afro puerto rican, afro cuban culture, and obviously african american culture, were in full force in the streets, particularly in the summertime, because we had rumbas in the park all the time. that's when you'd hear people playing drums, conga drums, and playing this beautiful rhythm. >> hinojosa: now, i'm going to stop you right there, because i bet some people are saying, "they had what in the park?" rumbas.
