i started my career as an elementary school teacher in the south bronx. i did that for about five or six years. before moving on to becoming a high school dean of students and guidance counselor for three years. and then i realized that education systems had more to offer to our kids. i didn't think the system is unlocking the unlimited potential. i wrote a proposal and submit it to new york city for me to start my own district public middle school in the northeast bronx. the proposal was supported. they said yes. in 2009, september 2009, i opened up my own middle school that i ran for ten and a half years. it was a project based interdisciplinary culturally responsive curriculum that really tapped into students creativity. our school system and our teachers do great work with kids who come from challenging circumstances. there's so much more we can do if we implement the right curriculum. we did that for about ten and a half years. there was great work there. and then i ran for congress, because when you are in education, you see all the issues, all of t

previous administrations based on what my friend ruben diaz junior did in the bronx. job well done. we will build on that. [applause] we are not stopping that. just a short walk from where we are now, we are working with the councilman to build the largest new 100% affordable housing development in four years. -- 40 years. this development will feature more than housing. it would have a world-class soccer stadium, public space in good jobs. this year we will pursue opportunities to add even more housing, jobs and infrastructure in all five boroughs. from the moment i took office, i said that we want to work in partnership with comp -- council members and communities to build more houses together. more and more of the council has come to say that let's make this happen. colleagues are standing up to be part of the solution. councilmembers eric, roger and keith to make it manhattan a true live and work community. and they're not saying not map pack -- not my backyard. they're saying build in my backyard. hats off to them. i met her outside the watson hotel with many other community organizers with south bronx mutual aid.e, if you can tell us what is the latest after the city took people who wanted to go to look at the facility, come back and report to others? >> a delegation of migrants who have been leading all of this work went yesterday to redhook to see the conditions. some of them had already been there and walked back to watson because the conditions were so poor. videos have been circulating on whatsapp of the conditions inside. only four showers for over 500 people, not enough running water, the beds are head to tail. a lot of issues right now of communicable diseases. covid-19, chickenpox. we've been dealing with these outbreaks at the 25 shelters we serve across new york city. i understand the interest want to house migrant families, but you cannot create second-class citizens just because they are asylum seekers, just because there single men, and put them in a different kind of shelter, detention cam just because they are single men. amy: so will they stay outside the watson at this point

♪ [siren blaring] karishma: i hear from icu nurse zach that he's been working in a hospital in the bronxht now, i'm okay. i'm exhausted. my feet hurt. and it's only what? da3. i had four patients. the floor i was on before that today, had six, d all my patients were on, like, three different drips, you know? sedation, and then pressure-support medicine to keep their blood pressure up, as well as on the ventilator, and it was just me, myself, and i with those four patients. karishma: how does this compare to what you're used to? zach: this is different, because they progress so fast. they'll come in short of breath, and then we'll put 'em on oxygen, and then that won't help them, and then the next thing you know they're intubated. it happens within, like, an hour or less, and it's prressed that quick. a lot of 'em will come in saying they had a cough for, you know, five or ten da, or symptoms for that long, a then, i guess, all their immune system just gets overtaken and can't fit it off anymore. and it finally catches up to them, and they can't brehe, so then they end up coming in to us.
