not simply jen and up these divisions out of nowhere, not simply exploiting something created out of thin air. what they're doing is exploiting -- this is a helpful chart from the brookings institution titled worlds apart showing a real distention between americans who feel it's a big beautiful country, mostly good people, versus those who feel our lives are threatened by immigrants and others and we must prioritize protecting ourselves. that there is the country's divide and pretty much everything else we talk about is mapped on this chart. the presidential election map, donald trump's base of support. many of conversations about media map onto this chart. open versus closed. what kind of society do we have or should we have? open versus closed? a different part of the media speaks to those segments. the conversation today is about trust in institutions and how it impacts democracy. that's related to the previous chart. i always cringe when i hear people say no one trusts the media anymore, no trust in the media, everybody distrusts the media. i completely reject that. everybody trusts some form of media. just that some of my neighbors trust fox and other neighbors trus
