for those of you unfamiliar with diane, she was going in brooklyn, new york, 190034, not too many years ago. second generation american of italian descent. she began writing at age 7. she probably was ready before then, but formally at age 7 committed herself to a life of poetry. she found what she loves. she lived and wrote in manhattan for years and became very well known as a writer of the beat movement. for the past 34 years, she has lived and worked, wisely, in northern california. 68. that is about when i started life. i live in brooklyn and a little backyard in the back and stone walk in the front. years back my son was in the front and we left our backyard and there was a huge august moon rising and we up the block and out into a neighbors backyard when there was a party and when my son got to the party, he said we've got a moon just like that in our backyard. let me say we've not a climate change just like yours in our backyard. the time spent yesterday, at least for me, was very well spent and leads up to the business of today. yesterday we talked about the state of knowledge. some of it was wonderfully obvious. and water goes down hill and collection areas and some of it was breathtakingly vague trying make a billion dollar decision about something. we talked about simple solutions and bold actions and diverse drinking water systems in san diego and we heard about thinking about discipline, winning over regulators and economic development agencies and environmental groups as getting them to work with us. today, we have the opportunity to make it much more useful because it's

. >> reporter: at this wholesale market in brooklyn, prices of fruits and veggies have been falling. in some cases, the declines are weather-related. but manager michael scotto says, lately, extra supply is pushing prices lower for many items. >> now that an influx of produce comes in, like anything else, no one wants to get stuck with it. so what they do is drop the price so everything moves a lot faster. >> reporter: falling prices are great for americans struggling to buy groceries or fill up their gas tanks, but the drop in costs reported today raises concerns about the u.s. soon facing a prolonged period of falling prices throughout the economy known as deflation. the half a percentage point drop in june wholesale prices follows declines of three-tenths in may and one-tenth in april. the federal reserve is also growing more concerned the u.s. is at risk for the kind of deflationary spiral that japan faced in the 1990s. policymakers revealed their worries yesterday with the release of minutes from a recent fed meeting. economist cary leahy says the threat of deflation is real. >>
