the superintendent of broward county schools said he is still a student of broward county schools. we don't know any other details about what other schools he might be affiliated with or any of those other circumstances. we believe he acted alone. we believe it was one young man with one gun, with multiple magazines of ammunition for that gun. as usual, the gun in this case was an ar-15 semi-automatic style assault rifle. semi-automatic means it's not a machine gun, it's not the hold the trigger down and it fires automatically, although you can buy accessories for assault weapons that make them fire that way. semi-automatic rifles fire instead where you get one bullet for every time you pull the trigger a trigger, and that can be an incredibly, incredibly efficient way of unleashing a large amount of firepower in a short amount of time. we don't have a lot of detail in terms of the timeline here from law enforcement about exactly how the event unfolded. we're told people were killed outside the school as well as at least a dozen of the 17 people killed being killed inside the schoo

the broward county school superintendent. but clearly, according to the sheriff he was armed to the gills with magazines full of bullets and ar-15 assault rifle and went to the school today, according to senator bill nelson of florida, who talked with law enforcement investigators, pulled the fire alarm in the afternoon getting all of the students and teachers to suddenly flood the hallways and flee the classrooms and then proceeded to one by one start opening fire. we have 17 confirmed fatalities. 15 others were wounded and have been treated or are still being treated at broward county florida hospital as we speak. the suspected gunman, cruz, did get treatment at broward county of north. he has since been released. we don't know how the government may have been injured, but what those injuries were, but the gunman is alive and appears to be fine and is now being processed in custody at the broward county jail into the next day or two we will take a long list of very serious charges. at 19 years old. that certainly entitles t

addison joins us on the phone from broward county. i know this has been an incredibly difficult day for you. you did not know the shooter, but you were there. you were hunkered down in a classroom for i'm sure what seemed to be an eternity. you're a junior, i believe, at the school. tell us what you experienced. >> hi. so, first off, the fire alarm went off, as the other student you just spoke with said. and we all proceeded to follow our rules and we started to head out of the classroom. and our teacher was out and about two other students were out as well. and then all the sudden, we heard the type of gunshot noise, but it doesn't sound like a full gunshot. it sounded more muffled. my teacher assumed it was a drill. the teachers had been trained to go through these drills. so we were expecting a drill, actually, for an experience like this. so we immediately went back into the classroom, made sure the door was locked, and we got in our position under the desks. and then we realized it's the last ten minutes of class and it just seem

the superintendent of broward county schools said today that he was still a student of broward county schools even though he had been expelled from this one. the alleged shooter was taken into custody about an hour after the attack. he was apparently taken into custody about three quarters of a mile down the road from the school's campus. that means in the midst of the chaos caused by his attack, at least for a while, he was able to escape the scene. in addition to the dozen victims killed inside the school, we believe several of the victims were shot outside the school. we expect eventually law enforcement will give us a more detailed time line of exactly how the attack unfoldedment for now we believe this was a lone attacker with a lone gun, with a single gun. and without me even saying it, you already know what i'm going to say that gun is. a semiautomatic assault-style rifle of a type commonly described as an ar-15. when it comes to gun massacres in our country, the ar-15 is hands down the mass murder weapon of choice in this era in our country. joining us now is melissa, a teache
