there's always a marked officer in the school from the broward sheriff's office. so somewhere in the school there was an officer wearing his or her broward county sheriff's office uniform. the word from the broward county sheriff's office and the coral springs police locally is that the shooter is in custody. no reason to believe there's another shooter. what we're waiting to find out now is about casualties, a motive and casualties. whether authorities have a motive is remaining to be seen. we expect to get information about the students involved and anyone else that may have been hurt as the first calls without out around 2:30 eastern time this afternoon. the latest that we've gotten from the locals is the numbers are varying wildly. senator bill nelson has been our source on multiple fatalities at school. let's listen in. >> to the right here is a live picture of the scene where the shooter was taken into custody. to the left is a picture of the scene, the perimeter there, outside of the high school. >> let's run over to vanessa. she's with the superintendent of

what we can tell you officially is the broward sheriff's office is this is an active shooter investigation. they're telling students in the school to remain there and stay barricaded. as you can see from the live pictures, the broward swat team, the sheriff's office, the coral springs police and other nearby agencies acting in coordination are all on scene at this school, which has been locked down. there's no change in the status. they're beginning to evacuate some students. in the early going, some pictures from earlier that i want to show you as they were just setting up triage stations outside the school, stoneman douglas high school and treating students on the ground before presumably taking some to hospitals. a lot of students were in the area and took them to nearby areas, to safety. students not complaining of pain. all of the fire and rescue with broward swat and the broward sheriff's office vehicles all converging on the school at the same time. a lot of students were certainly evacuated in the early going. the school still has a lot of kids inside even as we speak. again, these

the shooter, though, according to broward sheriff, is still at large. tell me what police are doing right now. >> they're trying to steb a perimeter, which is difficult when the shooter apparently was outside a school building, school facility, shooting into it. normally the shooter is inside the school which makes it easier to clamp down that physical perimeter. right now i'm sure they were trying to figure out how far they have to lay out a perimeter to enclose the area and keep the shooter inside that area if they can. that's the very, very first priority, is to get that perimeter set up. if he has now left that perimeter or they have a hard time establishing that perimeter, that's what they're working hard to do right now. in this situation also -- i'm not sure anyone has brought it up. it's a developing situation. it seems like this say different situation, the shooter, having been outside the school, the fire alarm being pulled inside the school means he may have had assistance from somebody inside that school. and so, to me, now you have possible

the school summit in broward county says there are numerous fatalities. we just heard the sheriff say more than one. law enforcement sources telling cnn there are at least two fatalities. sources telling us as well, the broward county sheriff saying there are at least 14 victims transported to local hospitals. the father of one student said his daughter told him there was blood all over the place. the sheriff says the shooter is in custody. he was a student, they believe and they do not believe as he current student there. there's aerial footage of a young man being placed into custody. students were hiding in closets. one teacher said she sheltered some 19 students in a classroom. >> we thought it was a fire drill. as soon as the fire alarm got pulled, i said that's not a drill. >> it's a shame. it's unnecessary. no words to describe how i feel. i was shaking, panicking. a lot of panic. >> the sheriff said all the students they know about are out of the school. they said a fire alarm went off and students started to leave the school more deliberately as if they were evacuating fo
