ceo of capital management, bill browder was once supportive of president putin.hat is until he was expelled from russia in 2005 after being considered a threat to national security. browder writes about his experiences in his terrific new book "red notices," a true story of high finance, murder and a man's fight for justice." he joined me recently to tell me about what he learned about how the kremlin works. you begin the book with this incredible story. you're the larger foreign investors in russia. your fund has returned 1,500% returns. you're managing 4.5 billion mr. in capital at a time when that was real money. and you get to the airport and they put you on a plane and throw you out. what have you done that so pissed off the russians? >> i wasn't just a regular investor. i was what's commonly referred to now as a shareholder activist. i started out just buying shares of russian companies and i realized that the oligarchs and government officials were stealing all the profits out of these companies. so i thought the only way i could run a sort of moral and pr

browder knows that he worked in russia at the time.and knows this because she wrote one of the best books about this. suddenly it's about putin, he inherited this system. but something has happened here. this vilification of putin, i've been doing this -- i'm probably the oldest at this table -- i do not recall this public vilification referring to the russian leader as a hitler which is completely incorrect that ever having been done to a soviet communist leader after stalin. the result is a kind of analysis you're hearing here. all about putin. there's no russia. russia has no agency. here is the point. henry kissinger said back in march of last year the demonization of putin is not a policy it's an alibi for not having a policy. it's worse, it's completely obscured. it's degraded any kind of rational analysis of this country as to who is to blame for this and how we get out of it. the result is as we talk -- as we talk and this is not idle rhetoric, we may be herd ling toward actual war with russia. >> partly there's an interesting

now browder is seeking to extend that law globally.counts his story in a new book "red notice: a true story of high-finance murder and one man's fight for justice." he joins us onset. thank you so much. we were looking through this book before. it's gripping like a crime novel, but it's your real-life story. one of the things you talk about -- i mean, you talk about a lot of things here. moving to russia investing, making millions of dollars, exposing corruption. but you talk about your lawyer, sergei magnitsky, who was tortured and killed. you mentioned he was the bravest man you've ever known. tell us about sergei and his story. >> well sergei was a simple tax lawyer working for me and i fell foul of the putin regime when i started to invest in russian companies and complain about the corruption of those companies. so i was kicked out of the country. my offices were raided. sergei was my lawyer. he started to investigate why the police were raiding my offices. he discovered that they raided my offices to seize documents that were the
