[applause] i can tell who the journalists are because they never stand up for me so i appreciate that. you can tell who everybody else is. thank you. nor should you so i appreciate that. andrea, thank you for the introduction and for your good work. had a wonderful conversation at her first year in journalism working for the prague czech republic post so thanks for the work you do for the press club. jamie i knew from his first days at miami university. he grew up in coply, ohio, which is just west of akron. went to coply schools. his mother still lives in summit county. thank you for the work you do as journalists. it's always an honor to talk in front of journalists because you are so important to our democracy. it's an honor because that -- your importance is even greater these days than any time in recent american history. your job, of course, is to ask tough questions to challenge powerful interests to expose wrongdoing. that comes with risks, as you know as journalists. too ofte

what do brown: ?ndependent journalists do is whatestion aspirations do you have after you leave the governor's office and what do you attribute the success of california to? i think brown: economies are very complex mechanisms. technology, software , all of that is very major. trade is a major factor. agriculture and innovation is a factor. tourism, hollywood and entertainment. , and ire many factors don't claim credit for that. that is the genius of the 20 million people who live there. silicon valley started with the military, spending money on defense, and then the programs are part of that expenditure. it expanded and went from there to where we are today, the most innovative place in the entire world. is an engine, but even that engine will reach a point of temporary exhaustion. that is what has happened to 10 times since world war ii. what am i going to do after this? that is a good question, but i have nine months ago. but you can be sure that you will hear from me, i am not writing off into th

brown has offered to send 400 guardsmen from across the state. brown says they are waiting for a confirmed mission to send troops. in the newsroom, jackie ward, kpix 5. >>> an orange county city is facing a lawsuit. los alamitos recently voted to pass an ordinance that exempts it from the state's sanctuary law. those were designed to protect illegal immigrants. the aclu is taking legal action against the city because of the move. the lawsuit asks the court to declare the city ordinance illegal. >>> two immigration and customs enforcement agents will not face charges in connection with a fatal crash in southern california. two people tried to escape the agents and died in a crash. police say the agents claim they were not pursuing the car with their lights and sirens on but video showed otherwise. >> these statements are not material. the only way they could be considered material is if the pursuit with lights and sirens was a factor in the cause of the accident. >> the district attorney could still file charges against the agents for giving false

arthel: either president trump or jerry brown will take a political hit for this. which one will it be? >> they're playing to different constituencies. jerry brown is playing to the californians and there's no real evidence that he's going to suffer for this. but president trump is taking the argument that you can't have a nation unless you fairly enforce immigration laws. and i think that he believes that as a political winning issue for him. so it's really about them playing to those different constituencies rather than there being a winner and a loser. arthel: with the president saying that the democrats blew it, could the president call democratic leaders to his office once again to discuss this and somehow get it on the books to try to find a resolution that would be amenable to everyone? >> he could. theoretically he could, certainly. i mean, both sides have in the past indicated a willingness to extend the protections of daca. those daca protections are prodly popular. the problem is what else do you attach to that deal. that is where the disagreement has be

governor brown, thank you. >> thank you. i would say that what is obvious is we're in a very perilous period in our nation's history. the politicaldy cour discourse debased, the polarization is at maximum levels. the dangers in the world is growing. the nuclear arms race is getting out of control. the turbulence in democracy in europe and latin america and even in parts of asia, not to mention our own country, is also very worrisome. so i do think it's an unusual time, and the whole noise and reporting on tweets and the trump versus everybody else, it distorts i think the reality that we are in the midst of a growing cold war with russia, which is highly dangerous. there is an uncertainty about where america is going in terms of trade, in terms of our relationship with mexico especially, and canada. and yet the challenge of climate change, of infrastructure, of social cohesiveness, it's very insistent. in california, i think we're taking a stab at almost all of these issues. i would be glad to talk about them in whatever way
