and then this guy named sam brownback comes down the pike, and he basically says government is dubbing you, you know, cut away all these kinds of things, and there were massive, massive tax cuts. really between -- starting in 2008, 2010, 2012, kansas cut its public school system more than any state in the country pretty much. there's a, hopefully, reader-friendly kind of data in my book, but if you just want to see the remarkable effects of what happens when you cut a schoolsy system, look at what happened to kansas which is within two years of these cuts, it fell totally off the cliff. all these things that were markers of success. so kansas fell to 42nding, 43rd in the country in terms of these national exams. dropout rates skyrocketed, and part of the, i guess, ironic two twist is that when i interviewed people in kansas and i'd say how could you support this for your own schools, and i got a fair amount of the same kind of answers that i'd gotten in other states. people told me, well, minorities are gaming the system, and they shouldn't be taking our tax dollars. one person told me
