. >>> cnn senior editor "the atlantic" ron brownstein has been listening in.on, your first thoughts? >> you can miss the magnitude of what we're seeing with the democratic candidates opening saying that the president of the united states is a racist or white nationalist. there is no precedents for that, and there's no precedent for majority of americans in the most recent quinnipiac pollal agreeing that the president is a racist. in fact in that quinnipiac poll, 88% of the people who disapprove in trump's job performance also said that they believe he is a racist. that just gives you a sense of how illegitimate he is to the circle of this base. this is just an extraordinary moment in the country. on guns, where we're going from here is very uncertain. the politics of guns have fundamentally changed in the last 25 years. in a way that makes it possible for democrats to go forward but lead the obstacles in the senate. >> this polarization which you outlined there, especially from that poll, it obviously is disturbing, but how does it play out politically? i mean

here to break these races down for us, ron brownstein. this breaking news in the context of this story in a second. but first of all, we talk about who has more at stake here. the republicans are just defending more terrain this year, correct? >> they are. you know, the common thread that links these individual races as we talk about them is it's becoming much harder for either party to win the senate races in states that usually vote the other way for president. it is now routine for 90% of voters to say they approve of the president in the senate race. 90% have disapproved to vote for the other parties. as you may know for the first time in american history, every senate race went the same way as the presidential race in that state. and so that is kind of a looming factor over many of these contests. there may be a few exceptions where a candidate can win if their side doesn't carry the state presidentially. i think the vast majority are going to fall the same way as the presidential election in that state. >> so ron, let's talk about f

. >> and ron brownstein, instead of calling back the i.c.e. raid, we just heard in the last several minutes the white house wants i.c.e. to conduct more raids like this. they're not pulling back, they're expanding. >> look, sean is right. from the very beginning, jim, the core -- the core of the core of the president's support had been the voters who are most uneasy about immigration in particular and demographic change in general. i go back to the republican primaries in 2016 in virtually every state it was only a minority of voters even in the republican primary who said that all undocumented immigrants should be zee ported but that minority voted for trump in overwhelming numbers in 2016 they provided a majority of the stoets in almost every state during the march to the nomination and he never lost sight of that. you see the president constantly -- today for example, he had a series of tweets accusing -- he said i'm not a racist. hollywood is racist. and it is a reminder that the president in following in the track of conservative populous
