here's the track from corpus to about brownsville. it will make landfall in a lovely place, one of my favorite beaches in the entire country that very few people have heard about. south of corpus, padre island. not south padre where the kids go for spring break. this is padre island, not a building in sight. there are no condos, no hotels, there are signs every once in awhile that says don't get stuck in the sand if you're driving because it will cost a couple hundred bucks to get out of there. this is not the way to south padre. corpus christi down to brownsville, total rainfall, some areas in the yellow, that's a couple of inches, but like you said, you need 15 inches, not one or two to save the crops. the crops, at this point, are not saveable. >> growing up in georgia, i know what it means when it's hot and humid, but in terms of dry conditions, they are having to water their homes, grabbing the hoses. >> yes, you do. >> watering their homes. >> you water the foundations to keep the foundations wet. >> never heard of this. >> stop

it should come onshore around corpus christi or brownsville and then it will dissipate as it moves into the mountainous terrain. here's how the computer models, each of these squigly lines represents each computer, and an almost unanimous decision, it will take us south to corpus christi. only one of our computers is hinting on a northward's track. in the dark red, this is where we need the rainfall the most, so it's actually going to head for a beneficial area. the problem is, it's such a small tropical storm that it's not going to be a widespread, it's not going to hit a large area. it's only going to have a small impact. and ed why, talk about -- they would just like the clouds from this storm. with 101 in san antonio, 104 in dallas, 100-degree heat all the way up to kansas city. we now have a heat warning still in effect from kansas city to the st. louis area, but now advisories from memphis all through much of kentucky, indianapolis is under a heat advisory, too, and even areas around raleigh. so that's where the hot air is. the other story is a lot of heavy rain through the great

so in brownsville, by saturday morning, this could be over with. and it should be anywhere between a 50 to 65-mile-an-hour tropical storm. so at bit of a pump, but it won't do any devastation. we were hoping for rain. you can see the scattered showers off the coast that will be arriving during the day today, but the big block of heavy rain is still well offshore. as far as the other weather stories, we continued our streak of 100 degree days in dallas yesterday. it was also ht in d.c. at 95. and that's the story in the mid-atlantic today. it's a steamy morning and it will be it that way this afternoon. we have heat advisories right up the coast on i-95 really from philadelphia southwards down in south carolina, still a heat warning around st. louis and also around it tulsa. the additional story is heavy rain this morning, just went through new york city, but back in the southern great lakes, we're getting nailed by thunderstorms really from chicago to detroit has been the worst of it and that will continue. so your fraft today, be prepared for afte

south texas coast ahead of tropical storm don as it is set to make landfall this evening between brownsville and corpus christi. the only evacuations so far have been a couple of beachfront campgrounds on the coast. look at don on the satellite radar composite. a 50-mile-an-hour tropical storm moving west/northwest at 16 but wind shear, strong winds aloft and dry air have kept it from strengthening so coastal impacts will be minimal. texas needs the rain badly as you mentioned, but most of it is south of don's center and will fall across deep south texas. that means no relief for most of the state that is in its worst drought in almost 50 years. 75% of texas in the worst drought category, exceptional, and those areas need at least 15 inches of rain just to put a dent in the drought. ranchers are sending their livestock to market early because they lack grass, rain and water for feed. the drought has been so severe that the u.s. department of agriculture declared the entire state of texas a natural disaster. and, lester, tonight, the lack of rainfall from don has dashed the hopes of many texa

somewhere between brownsville and houston is the forecast track. this would bring much needed rainfall into this area. where they got a ton of rain the past couple of days across northern iowa, illinois, and including chicago, this is some video coming into us overnight from davies county where they got over six inches of rainfall in some spots. about a half a dozen swift water rescue has to be made in this area. so they don't want any more rain. texas would like to see just a little bit of that 37 check out the numbers. over seven inches. grand rapids seeing over three inches. they will probably see a couple more thunderstorms some of which could become severe today and heat starts to build across parts of the eastern half of the country as well. we will be tracking don, of course, through jit the morning and next couple of days. >> all right. rob, thanks very much for that. >>> history making baseball in cleveland. did you watch this? >> i was at a yankee game yesterday and this happened while i was there. the news came out. >> interest didn't go

but as we get through the next several hours making landfall somewhere between corpus christi and brownsville they have had a lot of drought, will this help? all necessity were praying for the tropical storm in texas because 75 percent of the state into exceptional drought, the worst detroit they verve seen in texas history, exceptional drought. but the storm making landfall across south texas they need it across central texas and toward the southeast texas coastline so, unfortunately, they need several more storms to move into the region to put a dent in the drought. >> are there a lot of them out there to watch out? >> so glad you asked, because, of course, as we head into the height of the tropical season we look out here in the atlantic off the coast of africa, and this area of concern, the computer models are picking up on this and it could become a tropical storm by this week, and, perhaps, even a hurricane, as we head into next week. so we will keep an eye on that. >> if it becomes one, send it to texas, okay? >> it will be a weak storm bringing a lot of rain. >> a nice wet hurricane.

outlined showers and thundershowers brought more rainfall, more rain around houston than we did near brownsville unfortunately. maybe half of an inch or more for a few of these people. we were hoping for some kind of a -- not necessarily a drought buster. but maybe a little bit of dent would have been good. look at some of the cities and the rainfall deficits they had since january. we're talking more than a food in some of the locations including san antonio. that did not happen this time around. alas, there is another storm up there, right? it is getting to be that time of the year where the activity picks up. we have another area of development here into the atlantic. the models are intensifying this and it will likely become our next named tropical system, still a week away easy before you want to think about whether or not this will have an impact on the u.s. we used up four names off the list now. the last name is emily. so we'll likely see emily in the next 24 hours. heat a big issue, this will be building in the next couple of days. a little respite in dallas, by the way, might break tha

the center of the storm just offshore between corpus christi and also brownsville. winds at 50 miles an hour really making it a minimal storm at this point as it continue its to move in. what we'll find is this weakening over the next 24 to 48 hours. eventually becoming a depression throughout tomorrow morning. winds right now once again gusting up to 65 miles per hour. so we're going to see a kim inches of rainfall when all is said and done just south of corpus christi. but they need about 15 to 17 inches there in parts of texas. meanwhile back here, we are out of our drought from our very, very strong rainfall season. not only this year, but for the past two years in a row. and right now we're also tracking some rainfall up here across the sierra. it's been a while since we've had to pull out the ray todarad. but more on that later on. and on shore cooling flow. 64 in san francisco, 80 in is show and i. livermore officially with 87 degrees. so slightly above average in the east bay. but the fog coming back quickly. 68 here in san francisco and winds northwest at 1

the landfall is expected across the texas coastline anywhere from brownsville to just south of galveston and corps-- corpus christi, the forecast is for it to be a strong potential storm. beneficial is going to be the rainfall. we'd like to have it farther to the north and through san antonio and dallas. anybody in texas will take any sort of rain they can get. a ton of rain in chicago. they've set records as far as july rainfall, more thunderstorms expected today. that's where we'll see flight delays, chicago, could see delays up and over an hour. detroit, tampa, orlando, miami and san francisco as well. on the space front news here, want it tell you about a new discovery from nasa, orbiting potentially the earth's orbit are these asteroids called trojan asteroids. they've seen these kind of whirling around jupiter and saturn and usually asteroids don't orbit around planets but we haven't seen many orbit around earth. this could be interest that we keep talking about man visiting asteroids. >> right. >> so this may be an easy way to do it, some that are close to home. >> we have one. gr

pretty clear that these were straw purchases that took place in the united states and gun shops from brownsville, texas across the border, houston, san antonio, tucson, phoenix --these were all cases a straw purchasers buying weapons that wound up in mexico. how did the atf get on to the straw purchases? mostly because they were recovered in mexico. the serial numbers were submitted for tracing for the national tracing center. after a lot of arduous labor by the personnel at the tracing centers, they discovered who the purchaser was. and what stored the purchaser bought the weapon from. that is how the cases unfolded. what atf was interested in doing, and one could question the wisdom of that, was getting beyond the retrospective cases when a weapon is recovered. the idea was to get the weapons before they go. obviously they miscalculated and a good number of weapons got through to mexico anyway. host: gary on our independent line. caller: he said 70% of the guns were traced to the united states that were found in mexico. actually, 80% of the guns that are seized by the police and military are n
