bruce? >> for starters, i think the fundamental challenge that we take on health care is that americans are deeply skeptical of what government could do. we did not have enough time to reassure them on that front before we move forward our health care plan, and it was more than they were ready for. as far as silver lining, the president did come back three years later and passed the children's health plan, which covered 5 million kids by the time we left office. and the health-insurance industry, in anticipation of passing health reform, did a lot of things to hold on costs that we were planning to do, it was well worth the effort, and it is always hard, and it always has costs. what about you >> -- >> what about you? was or any silver lining to that experience? -- was there any silver lining to that experience? >> we needed health care reform for how best to do it, so i think the engagement of the dialogue that the policy issue full and center to the american people, so i think that was est

i'm bruce johnson. thank you for joining us. for the second time this week, hoarding conditions make it difficult to fight a fire. early this morning, fire razed through a green belt apartment building, the 8400 block of green belt road. surae chinn is standing by live. >> reporter: bruce, there were storage items, we're told, from prince george's county firefighters packed from top to bottom in this condo. a resident tells me an 87-year- old man crawled out of a window to escape the flames and smoke. some of the debris here outside of his condo right now, just lying here on the ground, just a lot of debris, charred mess, as you can see. prince george's county fire says all that clutter in the condo made it difficult for firefighters to contain this fire. it really hampered efforts this morning. 18 people are now displaced, including the 87-year-old resident. the elderly man was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and minor cuts. the two-alarm fire sent 60 firefighters to the scene around 5:00 this morning. smoke was bill

. >>> i'm bruce johnson. metro tonight is apologizing for this week's disaster that saw one person killed, more than 80 injured when smoke filled the train. more on that apology in a minute. first a new report released by the mayor who promised transparency into how the d.c. government reacted to the disaster. that report is bringing more blame and criticism of the area transit system that transports hundreds of thousands of riders every day. we begin our coverage tonight with stephanie ramirez. >> reporter: new in the investigations of the fatal incident on monday, the 37-page initial report released saturday shows emails that say there was a radio communication issue reported just days before the fatal incident. one email dated january 8 says d.c. f.d. units responded to the metro station yesterday and reported no 800 megahertz radio coverage anywhere in the station. there's also a written account in the report from one of the first responders to reach the train that rescued one squad member described helpi

bruce gordon is just back from radnor with the incredible story of love and perseverance. bruce? >> reporter: this was unbelievable. kara is a 3.5-year-old retriever mix basically an ban donned mut saved from certain death in the country of turkey when a university of pennsylvania archaeologist and her husband rescued the pooch and brought him home to west philadelphia in the fall of 2012. kara got loose. ran off a couple of months later. hadn't been seen since. that is until now. >> kara! kara! do you recognize me? >> reporter: what do you think? is that your dog? >> that is my dog. i know that. >> reporter: hen he was tentative but isa was certain her dog kara is back. >> i can't believe what's happening right now. >> reporter: he had run off in december 2012. vanished. but last november, a volunteer at the francis veil home for smaller animals century old know no kill shelter in radnor noticed a pooch roaming the streets several miles away. the folks at francis veil drag the dog then safely trapped it. then went to work online. >> started going online and googling googling, go
