[applause] >> thanks. great to be here. >> with this whole background how is it you are not a creative non-fiction writer? >> if you look at the program i look different than the average first time writer. i'm a little older and hopefully i learned something in the 68 years i have been around. i owe my writing career to someone who is an associate dean at the university of virginia medical school. a woman named sharon hoser. i thought she might be here today but she is elsewhere. sharon ran a two-hour writing class for physicians in their spare time. i went and at the end there was an exercise where they gave a sentence and all of us were supposed to write a paragraph or two of a story based on the sentence. i did that, turned it in, and a week later i got a call from sharon and she said really liked your paragraph. i have been running a critique group of about six or seven women here in town and we need a man. she wanted to know whether i wanted to try out. i wrote a story, remember the story still -- it
