simi knox himself was born august 18th, 1935, nearly 100 years after blanche k. bruce. he was born in alabama. the son of a carpenter and mechanic, knox grew up poor and with most of his family working as share croppers he, himself, took to the fields when he was old enough. in a 2004 abc news interview, simi recalled we worked literally from sun up to sun down, whenever there was work to be done. you didn't go to school. you worked on the farm. knox spent many of his childhood years in the care of other family members after his parents divorced and went on to live with his father and stepmother in mobile, alabama. there, knox loved to play baseball. a childhood friend of hank aaron, knox practiced baseball with bottle caps and broomsticks until he got wall oped in the eye with a real ball at the age of 13. knox started drawing as a way to retrain his injured eye. the nuns recognized his talent and arrange d lessons with a postal carrier. in 1956 knox spent several years serving in the military. he then attended delaware state college as a biology major. while he didn't
