hello, i'm bruce johnson, thanks for joining us. about a half dozen people have been arrested in a daylong confrontation that started this morning when park police began clearing mcpherson square of camping materials. police say their aim is not to evict occupy protesters, but they are now enforcing a ban on camping. police in hazmat suits were also going through the square, part of a massive cleanup. ken begins our team coverage. reporter: hey, bruce. it's been a very busy day for everyone involved with occupy d.c. of course police showed up in riot gear before dawn to in essence clean this park out. take a look behind me. you can see the operations still taking place right now. those people you see in hazmat suits, they were brought here by the police earlier today. right now they're clearing out the tents, getting rid of hazardous materials that they found here as well as getting rid of anything that's considered bedding. of course park police in riot gear standing by the mcpherson square, they forced protesters out on the street

bruce leshan is live in charlottesville with what happened in court today. bruce. >> yeah, this was our first chance to hear in detail the prosecution and the defense theories of this case that has touched so many hot buttons. college binge drinking, domestic violence, wealth and privilege. >> the first photograph of huguely in nearly two years, looking much thinner. it is just before the prosecutor told jurors that he beat yeardley love and then left her alone in her room barely able to move, unable to summon help until she died, possibly as long as two hours later. innocent prosecutor quoted an e- mail huguely allegedly sent love two days before killing her. you said you would get back together with me if i stopped drinking. then you went and bleeped mike burns. i should have killed you then. here's reaction from a potential juror who almost made it on the panel. >> i'm not sure if it was first or second degree. i don't think it was premeditated. >> but you are convinced he was involved already? >> oh yes. >> huguely's lawyer admits some, but not all of it

hello, i'm bruce johnson. u.s. park police still in control of the square tonight although half a dozen protesters are hovering nearby inside the square. earlier today, police in riot gear moved on to the campsite and clashed with protesters. six people were arrested. police say it was not a massive eviction but ken molestina is standing by live with an explanation for what it was all about. >> reporter: bruce, it's amazing to see how quiet mcpherson square has become tonight, quite frankly from anything we saw and since the movement began several months ago. the u.s. park police continue to have a portion of the park locked down. there are only a few protesters over there today. the showdown that took place is something folks have been anticipating for quite sometime. some were pushed out by force and others tried provoking officers by screaming and yelling profanities. one officer had to be taken to the hospital after he was hit with a brick thrown by a protester. in the end it was clear who won the battle. >> th

our own bruce lochan was in that courtroom every day for -- bruce leshan was in that courtroom every day for all that testimony. i have never heard of or seen a statement like the one you describe. >> he was actually crying, the prosecutor dave chapman, crying while he spoke to the jurors about this terror that yardly love must have felt when she -- yeardley love must have felt when she saw first the foot and then the whole body of this giant 6' 2 219-pound lacrosse player come into her bedroom where she was sleeping and the defense was a little bit rambling and destroying it on closing. he said at one point george huguely killed yeardley love, but he didn't kill yeardley love which didn't make a lot of sense to me. he said that george huguely contributed to yeardley love's death, but he didn't actually kill yeardley love, the question of intent is a big deal here. >> what about the defense overall strategy of trying to cast some doubt as to intent. did he mean to kill? >> reporter: >> in the course of his direct case he did show some doubt and perhaps some reasonable doubt, but i al

bruce lashan is live outside the courtroom in charlottesville. bruce. reporter: yeah, j.c., this is really a small town in the middle of a sensational national meurd. it is definitely starting to show a lot of the potential jurors have already made up their minds that george hugley, v is guilty of the brutal murder of yardley love. hugly was let in, the former la crosse player, lumbered into the courtroom. sheriff's deputies have strapped heavy weights around his ankles to slow him down if he tries to escape. hugly's family sits right behind him on one side of the courtroom, but he doesn't even seem to look at his parents. victim yardley love's family sits on the other side of the courtroom, many of them wearing pink scarves or pink coats. one potential juror turned up wearing a pink scarf too. the judge dismissed her. another juror was almost in tear as she talked about her own daughter who is almost the same age as yardley love. she says she really felt connected to the victim. she was dismissed as well. the judge has dismissed 10 of the 15 potential

our 9news reporter bruce leshan is outside the courthouse with an update. bruce? >> reporter: we've got through that. they've seated a jury and now we're on to opening statements. i just walked out of opening statements just a couple of minutes ago, and i will tell you it is depressing. it is distressing. the prosecutor is taking his first turn and he's told us the fact that we really didn't know up to now. he says that youngyardley -- young -- young yerdley love survived for about two hours lying in her bed in an off campus apartment here at uva after being horribly, horribly injured. he says that her carotid artery and the nerve around it was shut down, consistent -- an injury cost end with the hand on her throat. he says that pressure doesn't take long to stop the heart there. was severe damage to her brain stem, her ability to control her breathing, the time of primitive things that just keep you alive. that apparently shut down, but there was something for some two hours until her roommate came home. he says that george huguely, a big guy, 6'2", 209 pounds sh

bruce -- courthouse with more information. bruce? >> reporter: i just walked out and now we are to perhaps the most rivetting part of the entire prosecution case. right now in the courthouse, they are playing back this videotape statement. you might almost call it a confession, it's awfully close. that george huguely gave to police the morning after yeardley love was found dead. it was kind of -- you know, it happened overnight. so it was just a few hours after she was found dead. and they pick him up at his apartment. they wake him up. they take him down to the police station. they have not yet told him that yeardley love is dead. and they say what happened? what did you do? and he admits to a whole lot of this. he admits to going into her apartment. he actually admits at first to punching a hole in her door later admits he kicked a hole in her door to get into her. and then he says there was this wrestling match. they were arguing. he insists he just wanted to talk to her. and the detective says how did she get back in the bed? he

bruce leshan is in charlottesville. how did he look today, bruce? >> reporter: kind of nervous, intense, kind of stared out into the audience apparently at his family. they're kind of clustered right behind him. he entered in a loud clear voice not guilty to the charge of first degree murder and to the five other counts against him. after nearly two years in jail george huguely is drawn, thin in a blazer about two sizes too large, his eyes dark around the courtroom. on the uva lacrosse field he carried 209 pounds on his 6' 2 frame. he is nowhere near that now. both his family and the family of victim yeardley love are crowded on opposite sides at the front of the courtroom. yeardley love's mother cried softly in the pink scarf she and other family members are wearing in memory of the young woman so full of promise. her murder in may, 2010 drew international attention. huguely, a young man raised in private schools and privilege to a wealthy old chevy chase family, allegedly admitted to breaking down his ex-girl friend's bedroom door, to banging her

what are they asking, bruce? >> reporter: well, anita. one of the questions is about the jury instructions, but it is a little bit tough to figure out because the judge so far has declined to put those jury instructions out there publicly where we can look at them and read them and compare them with what we are hearing in the courtroom. it sounds like they are wrestling with exactly what you might expect them to wrestle with. the murder charges. in a question for the court, the jurors suggested that three of the instructions contradicted each other. one dealing with intent, whether george huguely intended to murder yeardley love. the other two apparently deal with causation. the cause of yeardley love's dealt. how she died. even the judge was con feuds about what the jurors are asking. the judge and the lawyers sent the jurors back a note asking them to clarify their question and we have yet to hear back from the jurors on that. >> okay, bruce, also, are they asking for a copy of a letter? >> that's right. they are asking for a copy of a

bruce lashan has been covering this trial from the very beginning. he now joins us live from charlottesville with more. bruce. reporter: hey, jc, the prosecutor moving very fast at this point. we've had a whole bunch of really interesting witnesses against george huguely this morning. one of them was a woman named caitlin taylor. she was george huguely's downstairs neighbor and she testified that she was sleeping about the time of yeardley love's death when she heard a banging on her door. her cousin opened the door, looked out, there was george huguely. she told them to go away and then she heard banging on the widz, looked out through the slats and there was george huguely. again, this was right around the time that yeardley love died. now, the day before apparently huguely had apparently also exchanged some racy, provacative e-mails with caitlin taylor, even though they had never had that kind of a relationship. the public, the media could not see what those texts said. they sounded embarrassing. they were facing just the jury and taylor told them

bruce leshan is live in charlottesville waiting for their verdict. what's the latest, bruce? >> anita, just about an hour ago, the bailiff went back, asked the jurors how they were doing. they said that they were progressing fine, said check back in an hour. right about now at 6:00, we'll let you know what the response is to that. here's the scene a little bit. a ton of media here to broadcast the verdict when it comes down. we have a lot of cameras here, satellite trucks and you can see the cameras across the street preparing to get people out of the courthouse. we aren't sure if they are going to talk because this jury is going to go into penalty phase if it convicts george huguely of any of these crimes. now they have had a couple questions for the judge. the first one was a question about some jury instructions that they suggest might be contradictory about intent and about causation of death. they also asked about a letter that was left out. the letter from george huguely to yeardley love and which he apologized for an earlier violent incident and promised to stop drinki
