the mayor of san bruno tells us vanderbuilt was one of the go- two contractors after the san bruno disastermayor says the city is committed to helping the homeowners rebuilt and hopefully it's just a bump in the road. a spokesperson with pg&e said pg&e is reaching is reaching out to the customers affected and said pg&e worked with vanderbuilt after the disaster but never recommended them. >> pg&e used them to do emergency repairs following the tragedy in san bruno. so they were part of our direct list but they were not on the list of preferred contractors. >> reporter: a spokesman for the contractor's state license board says there have been no complaints filed against vanderbilt construction from any of the san bruno fire victims but the company was suspended for several weeks in 2010 after a couple of lawsuits then reinstated. the company has a local office in castro valley. we left several messages with them on their answering service. so far no response. here in san bruno, i'm elizabeth wenger, for cbs 5. >>> don't bother waiting for a cable car in san francisco today or the rest of the

elizabeth wenger joins us now from san bruno to explain what went wrong. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. several families whose homes were deemed uninhabitable may be out of luck. the san mateo county times is reporting that several families up to five of them got an email last friday from vanderbilt construction. we have some video of their website. they said the company was shutting down until june and then management would consider whether to close the business possibly for good. these families tell the county times that they are particularly upset because they chose vanderbilt because it was on a recommended list by pg&e on their list of authorized contractors. now, for their part, pg&e said it will work with the homeowners on a case-by-case basis. a pg&e spokesman said, vanderbilt has gone out of business. we are deeply troubled by this development and will continue to do everything we can to help everyone affected by the tragedy. so, yes, several families are in limbo. some have already paid the contractor. they don't know when

tied to the pipeline explosion in san bruno.de hernandez tells us that the issue involves a contractor doing business in the disaster zone. jade. >> reporter: a couple of san bruno families are wondering what their next step is. according to the mercury news, one family in particular used to call this house their home. and now they're wondering what to do next because the contractor that pg&e connected them to is going belly up. take a look at this. this is the home here along fairmont drive. at least five families received an e-mail friday from vanderbilt construction. the construction company explained it was closing until june 6th to reshuffle resources and determine whether they needed to close its doors for good. it was pg&e who first provided a list of general contractors to families needing to rebuild. vanderbilt contractors was on that list. now pg&e has said it will work with owners on a case by case basis. we hope to hear back from pg&e to find out what families should do next and what this family in particular who use
